Winter weather putting big chill on spring prep sports

Yo, winter. Go home. You're drunk.

You're not only torturing drivers and Twins fans -- but high school kids who want to excel in their chosen spring sports are stuck inside.

According to the Star Tribune: "Many high school teams have yet to take the field for a game, meet, match or round -- let alone step outside to practice."

Thousands of games have been canceled statewide, with coaches "frantically" rescheduling games into fewer remaining weeks of play.

This week, the Minnesota State High School League released recommendations to help schools deal with the effects of the weather, the Fargo Forum reports. They include scheduling doubleheaders in baseball and softball, shortening golf meets to nine holes and emphasizing Saturday play.

John Millea, who writes a blog for the MSHSL web site, found an oasis of activity Tuesday at a track meet at Rosemount High School.

But even that event was slush-filled ... and cold: "The temperature zoomed all the way to nearly the mid 40s Tuesday, with a bright orb in the sky adding what some onlookers referred to as “sunshine” to the festivities. Athletes were bundled up except when it was their turn to compete."
