Get excited, Loons fans.

Minnesota United will break ground on its $150 million, 20,000-capacity stadium in St. Paul on Monday, the club has announced.

Even though the status of the property tax exemptions the franchise wants remains up in the air, the club is pushing ahead with construction with the intention for the stadium to open in 2018.

The team will play its first season of Major League Soccer in TCF Bank Stadium when it joins soccer's premiere competition next year, and will play at least 11 games in 2018 at the home of the Gophers.

Minnesota United owner Dr. Bill McGuire, MLS Commissioner Don Garber and St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman will be at the groundbreaking at 2 p.m. on Monday.

Not only will it provide a sparkling new stadium, which the team is paying for itself, it's also expected to jump-start the revitalization of the Snelling-Midway area, with McGuire having recently met with a hotel developer to discuss potential developments on the Midway Shopping Center site.

The Pioneer Press reports the club is starting construction even though the Minnesota legislature failed to pass tax breaks for it during the last budget session.

McGuire has previously expressed his desire to build the stadium even though the $3 million a year tax break – which is something other Twin Cities stadia get – has not been finalized, the newspaper notes.

Last week, United appointed former Orlando City manager Adrian Heath as the team's head coach for their inaugural season in MLS.
