Zimmer, Bowles, unknown third candidate finalists for Vikings head job

Publish date:

The Minnesota Vikings have apparently narrowed their head coach search to three candidates.

Ian Rappaport of NFL.com reported the news today, with a third mystery candidate joining Cincinnati defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer and Arizona defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, who have both interviewed for the job in the last week.

Rappaport, always in the know regarding NFL news, added a tidbit on Bowles possible hiring.

We know the third candidate for the position is not Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden, who was hired as the new Washington Redskins head coach today.

Gruden was scheduled to interview with Minnesota Thursday before being named the successor to Mike Shanahan.

Others believed to be candidates for the opening are Seattle coordinators Dan Quinn and Darrell Bevall, who reportedly interviewed last weekend, and Browns defensive coordinator Ray Horton, who sat down with Minnesota Tuesday.

The Purple have also reportedly asked to interview 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman, Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt, and Denver coordinators Jack Del Rio and Adam Gase.

Earlier in the day, it was rumored that Zimmer is the frontrunner for the vacant head spot.
