That puts it in the top 4% of our records. We landed just between July of 1916 and 2011 with an average temperature of 78.9 degrees (which is how we quantify months: averaging the highs and lows for the entire month). That was +4.6 deg F above the 1991-2020 (modern normal) average.

Temperatures across the state averaged +3 to +6 degrees F above normal, which is a huge amount. The standard deviation for July average temperature is just 3 degrees. Portions of northern Minnesota saw temps 2 standard deviations above normal. Dr. Mark Seeley says that it was likely the 5th or 6th warmest July on a statewide basis as well.

A quick statistical analysis shows that July temperatures have warmed 2.1 degrees over the past 50 years. That may not sound like a lot, but remember, that's most of a standard deviation increase. We can then easily say that this July's temperatures were made nearly 2.5 times more likely due to that warming.

In fact, Climate Central's Climate Shift Index, a rapid attribution analysis of daily average temperatures, shows that 9 of the 31 days in July had a Climate Shift Index of 2 or higher, meaning climate change made those temps at least twice as likely.

The days with the most obvious climate change fingerprints were July 13-14 in far northern Minnesota. That's when parts of the Boundary Waters reached 100 degrees for the first time ever recorded. Sea Gull Lake hit 101 degrees on July 13. Those temperatures were made 5 times more likely due to climate change.

With a figure that high, that means those readings were virtually impossible without the warming we've seen in recent decades.

Not to be left out, the Twin Cities hit 100 degrees on July 27. Of course, that rapid and extreme heat earlier in the month helped set the stage for fires to blow up in Ontario and northern Minnesota, which helped us set a record for the worst air quality ever measured in the state from July 15 to July 17.

We also saw near-record dew points in the Twin Cities and southern Minnesota on Monday, July 27. MSP hit an 81-degree dew point, just 1 degree from the all-time record of 82. We've only had an 81-degree dew point two other years: 2011 and 1999.

Not only is our climate warming, but it's becoming more humid in summer. Prior to the 1980s, we only reached 80-degree dew points once, in 1966. All the other instances, 7 of the 8 times, have been in the modern few decades.

The other big headline is that this was likely the hottest month on record for the contiguous United States.

July 2026 was definitely one for the books, not just in Minnesota, and it's likely just the first symptom of a rapidly intensifying El Niño pattern combined with a much warmer climate on Earth already.

Following a civil settlement and an investigation by the Minnesota Attorney General's Office, Blaine-based non-profit MN Fundraising Initiative (MNFI) agreed to cease operations. The organization has also filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

According to the court filing, MNFI claimed to be a non-profit grant-making program that helped families cover school expenses and activities.

In actuality, it operated as a staffing agency, providing low-cost labor to vendors at concession stands at Target Field, Target Center, Allianz Field, US Bank Stadium, Grand Casino Arena, and numerous University of Minnesota locations.

"MNFI was a sham charity that took advantage of parents who wanted to afford their children's activities by luring them into 'volunteering' their labor in exchange for future 'grants,' which is a clear violation of Minnesota law," said Attorney General Keith Ellison in a statement.

"MNFI and the for-profit operators it contracted with also suppressed the wages and opportunities of legitimate, unionized employees at the venues they staffed, robbed volunteers of basic worker protections, and passed on those costs to taxpayers."

The so-called volunteers employed by MNFI were often the parents of kids participating in sports and dance activities, or college students, according to the Attorney General's Office.

These volunteers often worked alongside and did the same duties as paid, unionized workers at stadium concession stands.

"The scheme further benefitted the for-profit companies that operate the concessions where MNFI's 'volunteers' worked: they were able to avoid the same legal obligations as an employer that MNFI did, significantly reduce their own payroll, and take a tax write-off on the 'charitable' contributions that they made to MNFI," the Attorney General's Office detailed in a press release.

By calling them volunteers, MNFI was also able to skirt paying state and federal taxes and benefits, such as contributing to unemployment insurance and workers' comp insurance.

The volunteers were not unpaid, as MNFI claimed, but were paid in "grants" for their work, with the amount of the grant directly tied to the number of "volunteer hours" completed.

The Attorney General's investigation also uncovered that the non-profit awarded more than a million dollars in grants that benefitted individuals tied to its board of directors.

In response to the news, unionized concessions workers at Target Field, employed by Delaware North and represented by Unite Here 17, have announced new plans to strike over what they call unfair labor practices. Delaware North workers at Target Field have been without a union contract since January 1.

The strike will take place ahead of Noah Kahan's sold-out concert at the Twins stadium, with the union also calling on all concession stands to end "volunteer-run" stands.

Bring Me The News has reached out to a representative from MNFI, but did not immediately hear back.

Mario Brandon Thompson, 32, was charged Friday in Olmsted County District Court with one count of receiving profits from prostitution and one count of engaging in sex trafficking.

According to court documents, the investigation began when an undercover detective with the Rochester Police Department responded to an online sex advertisement on July 21. 

The detective made contact with a woman offering sexual acts in exchange for money and arranged to meet with her at a Rochester hotel the next day. The woman was then placed under arrest upon meeting with the detective. 

In a statement, the woman told police she had met a man from Chicago, identified as Thompson, with whom she believed she was entering into a romantic relationship. 

The woman allegedly explained that Thompson instructed her to have sex or "scam" other men in exchange for money. Thompson similarly controlled other women across the Midwest, including one other individual the woman identified by name, court documents allege.

Thompson is accused of assaulting the woman if she did not have sex with other men, provide him with money, or "listen" to him, according to the charges. 

Rochester police obtained a tracking warrant for Thompson’s phone, which showed him traveling between Detroit, Chicago, Indianapolis, and Columbus, Ohio, as well as other smaller cities. 

"The female said she has been taken through multiple states, as far east as Michigan, to engage in sex acts at the direction of Thompson," the criminal complaint reads, adding that the detective corroborated the woman's claims through information on her phone.

The woman contacted Thompson and claimed that she had $5,000 to give him from another "customer." Thompson arrived in Rochester on July 29 and was placed under arrest. 

Upon arrest, Thompson denied most allegations but did admit to managing women's online profiles on the website OnlyFans, charges say.

Kyle James Steffen, 38, of Wyoming, was charged in Chisago County District Court earlier this week with one count of setting a spring gun/pitfall/deadfall/snare trap.

According to the criminal complaint, the Wyoming Police Department received a report of spikes being laid in a yard near Goodview Park on April 28. A woman had also told police that a man at a nearby home had been yelling at her children to stay out of his yard.

Once at the home, officers saw a wide piece of plastic set in the grass with around 40 three-inch screws sticking straight up from it, according to the complaint,

Officers also saw bike tracks going from Goodview Avenue into the yard as a shortcut into the park and determined the device was meant to deter children from traveling that way. 

Officers identified Steffen as the homeowner. He admitted to placing the device in his lawn to keep kids away and stated that they continued to bike through his lawn despite the trap and him yelling “hundreds of times,” according to the complaint. 

Steffen also told police that the device had not injured anyone, the charges state.

Steffen is due back in court later this month.

Vacation rental platform HomeToGo has released its annual State Park Index, ranking 150 U.S. state parks based on their allure to travelers, as well as being a good value for the cost of the trip. There's quite a bit of love to be found for Minnesota's open spaces in the list. 

Itasca State Park ranks highest, at eighth. It's followed by Jay Cooke State Park at 18th, Tettegouche State Park at 27th, and Gooseberry Falls State Park at 38th.

Across 150 state parks — an expansion from last year's ranking — the company combines its own travel data along with data about affordability, visitor satisfaction, scenic appeal, wildlife diversity, trails, and travel interest.

Inside the study's parent categories, Minnesota had high visitor satisfaction scores across the board, with all four parks landing inside the top 12. Tettegouche also placed highly in HomeToGo's "hidden gem" score.

After opening its lone outpost in the state last year, the national smoothie chain will open a new location in Burnsville on Saturday, Aug. 1. 

The chain is known for a menu focused on healthier quick-service options, including protein-forward options. Smoothie King previously had locations in the state, but those had closed, leaving Minnesota without one until the Woodbury location opened in November.

Saturday's grand opening celebration includes a ribbon-cutting ceremony, photo booth, contests, and smoothie-centric giveaways, as well as $3.99 smoothies throughout the day. 

Starting Aug. 1, the Smoothie King at 1500 County Road 42 W will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday.

That's one of the truckload of exciting concerts hitting the Twin Cities concert calendar this week. Other shows include four shows with comedian Michael Che, who is recording his upcoming Netflix special at First Avenue.

On Monday, Mo’ Bettahs began slinging Hawaiian staples in Maple Grove at 11611 Fountains Drive, inside the Fountains at Arbor Lakes.

The chain, founded in Utah in 2008 by brothers Kimo and Kalani Mack, specializes in Hawaiian barbecue and plate lunch dishes such as teriyaki chicken and steak, Spam musubi, and kalua pork.

In a ruling issued Friday, U.S. District Judge Donovan Frank points out that Gov. Tim Walz signed the legislation in May, yet xAI's lawsuit wasn't brought forth until Tuesday.

"xAI filed the motion on July 29, 2026, nearly three months after the law was signed, and only three days before the law is set to take effect," the judge wrote. "Such a delay in bringing the action and the motion suggests that harm is not immediate."

The new law prohibits websites or apps that allow users to generate fake, sexualized images and videos of a person without their consent. It enables someone who's exploited in a nudified image to take legal action, with companies or users facing a potential fine of up to $500,000 for each violation.

xAI's lawsuit argues that the law is too far-reaching and violates free speech, with the company behind the controversial AI chatbot Grok claiming that it "strictly prohibits its users from generating nude or sexualized images of people without their consent and has indeed filed suit against users who evade its extensive technological blockers to generate such images in violation of this strict prohibition."

DFL state Sen. Erin Maye Quade, who authored the legislation that sailed through the Legislature with near-unanimous support, said in a social media post Wednesday that xAI is facing three new lawsuits for "allegedly creating child sexual abuse material and committing image-based sexual violence."

Frank scheduled a hearing on Aug. 19, when he will make a final decision on whether to grant a temporary injunction to pause the law.

Asked by a reporter Friday if he could rule out Iranian involvement in the coordinated cyberattacks on more than 30 Minnesota water systems, Trump replied, "I don't think so. I think Minnesota is behind it. You know who is behind it? Minnesota. Because they are grossly incompetent. I don't think there was an Iranian cyberattack. I think Minnesota ought to get its act together."

"I would blame it on Minnesota and the governor, the corrupt governor of Minnesota," he also said, according to USA Today.

Trump made the comments during a cabinet meeting at Camp David in Frederick County, Maryland.

The president then added that "massive future things having to do with corruption in Minnesota" will come to light, though he didn't elaborate.

Minnesota and Walz have been frequent Trump targets, particularly since the uncovering of widespread fraud and mismanagement in the state's social services programs.

Walz appeared to respond with a short social media message Friday afternoon that read, "Trump can't beat Iran because he's too busy waging war with Minnesota."

On Thursday, The New York Times reported that investigators believe Iran may have been behind the coordinated attack targeting multiple municipal water systems across Minnesota earlier this week.

Federal and state officials told the Times the attacks were "probably" the work of Iranian hackers. More than 30 community water systems across the state were targeted by cybercriminals on July 26 and 27, affecting automated controls and online capabilities.

Minnesota IT Services (MNIT) declined to assign blame, sharing the following statement on Thursday: "We are not attributing this activity to a specific actor at this time. Attribution requires careful analysis of technical evidence alongside broader national and international threat intelligence, and our federal partners are best positioned to lead that work. We understand the public interest in knowing who may be responsible, but we will not speculate while the investigation continues. Federal partners should address questions about any potential attribution."

Cities hit by the attack include Plymouth, South St. Paul, Maple Plain, and Braham, among others. The incident prompted the state to immediately activate its cybersecurity incident response capabilities.

Brayden Grunzke was killed when the crash occurred on Highway 169 in Sherburne County.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Grunzke was driving a Mitsubishi Lancer south on Highway 169 while the dump truck was traveling north. The dump truck was in the left lane, with the driver allegedly turning west onto 221st Avenue Northwest when the two vehicles collided at around 6 a.m.

Grunzke was killed in the crash, while the driver of the dump truck was uninjured.

Grunzke was a 2026 graduate of Zimmerman High School. A GoFundMe was created to support his family in the aftermath of the crash. 

“Brayden was not only a loving son, but also a cherished friend to many. He brought joy to those around him through his passion for video games and his love of spending time with friends,” the fundraiser reads. “His kindness and warmth touched everyone who knew him, and his loss has left a deep void in the hearts of his family and community.” 

As of Friday, the fundraiser had reached around $17,300 of its $20,000 goal.

At its flagship location in the Linden Hills neighborhood, Càphin had its walk-in cooler break twice and its air conditioner give out for the third and final time, forcing the cafe to close earlier than usual.

"The heat has been absolutely brutal," the business wrote in a Thursday social media post. "We've had to shut down early for the safety of our staff and guests. We've never had a major issue like this before, but I guess there's a first time for everything."

July has been a scorcher in Minnesota. The temperature reached at least 90 degrees for 10 straight days, July 11 to July 20, and it's topped 90 four more days since, including high temps of 99 and 100 degrees on July 26 and July 27, respectively. The average high temperature in Minneapolis July 1-30 was a whopping 88.2 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

The location on France Avenue was open from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Thursday and Friday, when it's supposed to close at 3 p.m.

"We are only able to operate in the early morning before it gets too hot," the coffee shop explained. "We hope you understand and appreciate your kindness and support."

Càphin's newest location on First Avenue in downtown Minneapolis is typically closed on the weekends, but it will be open this Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There's also a stall the Mill City Farmers Market, which is held every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The business expects its AC in Linden Hills to be fixed early next week.

The ceiling at Grace Christian Church, located at 501 West College Street in Albert Lea, collapsed on July 10. While no injuries were reported, the incident means the entire ceiling must be rebuilt, according to a GoFundMe created by pastors George and Jill Marin.

Along with the ceiling, pews, ducts, sound, light, and media equipment must also be repaired or replaced. 

The ceiling collapsed on July 10 around 4:30 p.m., when a "loud boom" was heard, according to Pastor George Marin. He called it a "catastrophic failure" of the ceiling.

"We are in absolute shock and just heartbroken because of all the work we've put into our building," Marin said in a July 10 Facebook post.

Insurance is expected to cover around one-third of the costs, according to the fundraiser. 

“Since founding GCC 30+ years [ago], we have faithfully served our local, national, and global communities,” the GoFundMe reads. “Our ministries have reached people experiencing homelessness, those struggling with addiction, individuals in jail, and at-risk youth, making a lasting impact on countless lives and families.” 

As of Friday, the fundraiser had reached around $2,400 of its $200,000 goal. 

The fried chicken chain will open a new restaurant at 16490 W 78th St. in Eden Prairie on Friday, Aug. 7. 

Earlier this year, the chain announced plans to open at least six new locations around the state. Stores in Edina and Oak Park Heights have already opened this year, with plans in the works for shops in Rogers, Mankato, and St. Cloud. 

While it has made its name on spicy Nashville Hot Chicken options and late-night hours, it also caused a stir earlier this year when the company bought a billboard advertising its new Edina location right over the Richfield outpost of Nashville Coop.

“You can buy a billboard, but you can’t buy taste,” Nashville Coop co-owner Arif Mohamed countered in a social media post, adding that his restaurant is “locally owned and actually seasoned.”

After the grand opening, the new Dave’s Hot Chicken location will be open Sunday through Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Eloise will undergo a rebrand and refresh later this summer, with its menu shifting towards more casual, approachable fare inspired by The Grocer's Table, its sister restaurant next door.

The restaurant near Wayzata Bay will briefly close from Aug. 31 to Sept. 3 and reopen on Sept. 4 as Bar Eloise.

“We have always believed the best restaurants belong to their communities,” reads a Thursday announcement. “Over the last few months, we’ve listened closely to our guests, and one message came through clearly: they love the food and the spirit of Eloise, but they want a place that feels easier to drop into, more casual, and more connected to the neighborhood.”

Bar Eloise will feature an expanded patio and a more relaxed atmosphere, with enhanced walk-in availability, additional bar seating and TVs for watching sports.

Lindsay Pohlad, wife of Minnesota Twins owner Tom Pohlad, opened Eloise in the fall of 2024.

The restaurant began as an evening-focused restaurant and bar, offering an "elevated, full-service experience" complementing The Grocer's Table, which launched in the spring of 2020.

According to the Burnett County Sheriff’s Office, a woman called 911 to report she was being assaulted in Grantsburg Township just after 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday. 

Deputies were able to find the woman in a different location, and she told them she had been assaulted by a 26-year-old man, who was allegedly an acquaintance.

The sheriff's office said the woman, who was suffering from physical injuries, indicated that the man was armed with a rifle and had fired two shots into a home.

Officers tried to contact and locate the man, but were unable to. They pinged his cellphone in the area, and multiple agencies responded to the scene and began attempts to get the man out of a home. Drones, robots, and gas were used during the standoff.

Law enforcement then physically cleared the home, finding a dead dog and the man, who was also dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. 

The Barron County Sheriff’s Office has taken over the investigation.

The name and identity of the man has not been released as of Friday morning.

BirdEz, a halal hot chicken restaurant, will open a second location this week, adding an outpost in Minneapolis' Dinkytown neighborhood around the University of Minnesota campus.

Currently, BirdEz has a location on Lake Street in Uptown Minneapolis, in the former home of Famous Dave’s. It moved to that storefront last summer, relocating from its previous home in Blaine’s Northtown Mall.

BirdEz has built its name on serving a variety of halal fried chicken — sliders, sandwiches, and tenders — along with specialty items such as the EZ Style Fries, which come loaded with chicken and the restaurant’s EZ sauce.

“We’ve been working hard to bring something special to Dinkytown, and we can’t wait for everyone to experience it,” the company writes in an announcement.

The new outpost is located at 511 14th Ave. SE, and they’ll be celebrating the opening by dishing out free sandwiches and sliders from 3–6 p.m.

K & K Tubing owner Roger Klemm tells Bring Me The News that two conditions are need for a float down the river: adequate water levels and warm temperatures.

While the weather has definitely been hot enough for a dip, unfortunately, water levels have not been as ideal.

The summer staple that's operated for nearly 40 years was forced shut down early for the season because water levels on the river are just too low.

Sunday marked K & K Tubing's last day, with the business telling tubers to use extra caution around rocks and warning that they may need to walk where the water is lowest.

Klemm hopes to reopen later this summer if Mother Nature complies and the area gets enough rain to allow tubers to float safely.

It’s a similar story for Charlie’s Tubing, which also wrapped up its 2026 season earlier than expected last weekend in the midst of dropping water levels on the Otter Tail River.

As of Thursday, portions of Becker County were in a moderate to severe drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

Bring Me The News metrologist Sven Sundgaard says more than 75% of the state is currently experiencing drought conditions, making it the highest level of drought in nearly two years.

“Today is one of the hardest announcements we’ve ever had to make,” reads an announcement from co-owners Cristian and Karen De León. “After many sleepless nights and difficult conversations, we’ve made the decision to close El Sazón Cocina & Tragos.”

The restaurant was a 2023 expansion of the owners’ original concept, the Eagan-based El Sazón Tacos and More, which opened in 2022, serving fresh takes on Mayan cuisine inside a BP gas station. That location remains open.

The group will also continue to operate its counter at Eat Street Crossing in Minneapolis and its most recently opened outpost, Xelas by El Sazón. The latter opened in 2025 and offers modern turns on traditional Guatemalan dishes in Stillwater.

“These next two weeks will be emotional, but we hope you’ll stop by one last time,” the announcement continues. “We’d love the chance to cook for you, share a hug, reminisce, and personally thank you for being part of this journey.”

Justin Lee Campbell, 42, of Faribault is facing charges of theft, interfering with emergency communications, and property damage.

An investigation began on July 27 when authorities in Faribault received a tip that someone named Justin had stolen a Flock camera.

When officers checked the camera, located at the intersection of Lyndale Avenue South and Highland Place, they discovered it had been cut off, with wires hanging freely.

According to criminal charges, investigators called the tipster back, who told them that Campbell came into his store and bragged about stealing the Flock camera.

Campbell also allegedly said he was going to take the camera apart.

Flock cameras are used by law enforcement to capture a vehicle's license plate number and others details, including its make, model and color.

The cameras are sometimes used in criminal investigations, sending notifications directly to officers and dispatch, and notifying them of AMBER and KOPS alerts.

But the relatively new law enforcement tool has come with its share of controversy, with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) claiming that Flock is building a "nationwide mass surveillance system."

"If there are Flock cameras in your city, they are tracking, logging, and sharing your movements without a warrant," the ACLU says on its website.

A few days before the alleged theft, Campbell told another witness about the city’s Flock cameras and how they track him coming in and out of the city, according to the compaint.

Investigators used store surveillance video to identify Campbell, later getting a search warrant for his property.

When they arrived, Campbell told officers that he assumed he knew why they were there, but claimed that he found the Flock camera in the road and did not intend on keeping it. 

When asked, Campbell got the camera, which had the same serial number of the missing one, and gave it to law enforcement.

The estimated cost to replace the camera is $800.

Campbell was released from the Rice County Jail earlier this week. He is due in court in October.

The fire broke out just before 5 p.m. on July 17 at the Helix Apartments complex, located at Walker Street and Pennsylvania Avenue South, off of Highway 7.

After finishing their origin-and-cause investigation, fire officials determined that the blaze started on a fourth-floor apartment balcony, but they were unable to determine exactly what caused it to spark.

“The investigation was complicated by the extensive fire damage in the area of origin, which limited investigators’ ability to identify a specific ignition source or sequence of ignition,” reads a summary of the report.

Though the cause of the fire has been classified as undetermined, officials were still able to reach some conclusions.

Investigators didn’t find any evidence that the fire was set intentionally or that it started because of a discarded cigarette or a grill.

"Evidence may allow investigators to determine that certain potential causes are not supported, even when the damage prevents them from identifying the exact ignition source," per the summary.

If new information or evidence becomes available, the undetermined classification could be reconsidered.

In the wake of the fire, dozens of GoFundMe pages have been established to help support victims, who have been left without their homes and belongings.

The building’s insurance carrier may complete additional on-site examinations in the coming days.

A final investigative report is expected to be completed by the end of August. 

It's four days away, so take everything with a grain of salt. However, NOAA's Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has put a 15 percent chance of severe storms, aka a slight risk, in eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota on Monday.

We'll run through some of the models and outlooks below, but one thing to note is that the Grand Forks office of the National Weather Service thinks there could be limited moisture to mix with strong shear (turning winds with height), therefore downgrading the severe threat.

"We'll keep an eye on this through the weekend," says the Twin Cities office of the National Weather Service.

The European model's lightning density display shows intense storms along the North Dakota-Minnesota border around 7 p.m. Monday, with that cluster then advancing southeast by 10 p.m. Again, these are very rough estimates that shouldn't be taken as gospel.

StormNet's tornado probabilities are fairly elevated for northwestern Minnesota on Monday afternoon and evening.

As the evening progresses, StormNet is picking up on the severe threat shifting from tornadoes to damaging winds. That's very common when storms morph from being isolated supercells to clusters or bowing line segments.

StormNet appears to be more bullish on severe weather than the machine-learning model from the National Severe Storms Laboratory.

Colorado State University's machine-learning model does not agree with StormNet's elevated severe weather forecast. This could change, but for now, it's pretty blah.

Chipotle Mexican Grill will open yet another Minnesota outpost on Friday. Its arrival brings the chain to nearly 100 restaurants in the state, and three in Minnetonka alone, according to the company's website.

Unlike many of the chain’s recent openings, this one won’t have a Chiptotlane, the drive-thru lane for online orders. Otherwise, it’ll have all the bell peppers and whistles of any other Chipotle.

Per an announcement, the company expects the new location to add 30 jobs in the community.

The restaurant at 1807 Plymouth Road will be open daily from 10:45 a.m. to 10 p.m.

An image of the suspect, described as a white male between 35 and 50 years old, started circulating Thursday.

The image below was captured just after 5 a.m. on July 5 in the park, located at 200 Warner Road, just outside downtown St. Paul. At the time, the man was wearing an orange T-shirt with white lettering, black shorts, and gray shoes, and was carrying a black backpack.

Damage to the 24 saplings is estimated at $28,000 to $30,000.

It's the latest in a string of incidents where newly planted trees along Shepard Road have been snapped, stripped or uprooted, costing the city tens of thousands of dollars.

The St. Paul Parks Conservancy is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading authorities to those responsible for the vandalism.

This fall, the retailer will unveil a newly expanded, 5,500 square-foot store with a bigger selection of apparel, accessories, denim, and footwear in its existing location on Level 1, South.

The expansion also includes the addition of Madewell Men, which will offer men’s clothing, denim, outerwear, and everyday essentials.

“We’re thrilled to see Madewell expand its presence at Mall of America with a larger footprint, reimagined store concept, and the addition of Madewell Men,” Mall of America’s leasing director Ashley Hofmann said in an announcement.

“The investment reflects the continued strength of the Madewell brand and enhances our ability to deliver a best-in-class shopping experience for our guests.”

Madewell has several other locations in the Twin Cities metro, including stores at Edina’s Galleria, Minnetonka’s Ridgedale Center, and in Minneapolis’ North Loop.

The Mall of America store is temporarily closed as it undergoes remodeling.

Reginald "Reggie" Freeman was confirmed Thursday by the Minneapolis City Council. He was nominated by Mayor Jacob Frey in May following a nationwide search.

Freeman becomes the 19th chief of the Minneapolis Fire Department, following the retirement of Bryan Tyner, who was with the department for 30 years.

“As our city continues to grow and face new challenges, we need leaders who can strengthen our institutions, support the people who serve, and deliver results for residents," Frey said in a statement Thursday. "Dr. Freeman has a proven record of doing exactly that, and I’m confident he will lead the Minneapolis Fire Department with professionalism, accountability, and a deep commitment to service."

Freeman previously led fire departments in Oakland, Calif., and Hartford, Conn. He also served as civilian fire chief for the U.S. Department of Defense in Iraq, and most recently, as executive director of fire and emergency medical services in Saudi Arabia.

The Minnesota Star Tribune reports that Freeman was confirmed on a 10-2 vote, despite some council members voicing concern over him being mentioned in a lawsuit alleging sexual and racial harassment and discrimination when he was Hartford's fire chief between 2016 and 2021.

In his own statement, Freeman thanked the mayor, city council and Minneapolis residents for entrusting him to lead the Minneapolis Fire Department into its next chapter, saying he does not take the responsibility lightly.

"We will lead by example, support our community, and I will ensure that each of our firehouses plays an active role in the fabric of the neighborhoods they serve," he said. "We are committed to keeping every resident and community member safe.

"As we build meaningful relationships with businesses, schools, faith leaders, and community organizations, this department will continue to reflect the community we protect. My family and I are excited to now call Minneapolis home, and I can’t wait to get started."

Freeman will soon relocate to Minneapolis with his wife of 23 years, Erin, and their two daughters, Harmony, 13, and Joy, 9.

“Minneapolis has always stood out to me—not just for this opportunity, but for its people and their strong sense of community," he said in an earlier statement. “My wife and I are excited to raise our children here and to join a community that has inspired the entire country with its resilience and commitment to one another over the past several months.”

Interim fire chief Melanie Rucker will now return to her previous role of assistant fire chief.

According to the Cass County Sheriff's Office, someone in Mapleton — a town of about 1,300 people just west of Fargo — made a phone call around 8:30 a.m. to report seeing "what they believed to be a mountain lion near Annie's Lane, walking behind residential homes."

The sighting hasn't been confirmed, but residents in the area are advised to use caution if out and about.

"Parents are encouraged to discuss with their children the importance of staying away from any large wild animal they may encounter and immediately notifying a trusted adult if they observe what they believe to be a mountain lion," the sheriff's office said.

Anyone who sees a mountain lion is urged to call 911.

"The North Dakota Game and Fish Department advised that, without physical evidence, it is difficult to confirm or rule out a reported mountain lion sighting," the sheriff's office added. "They also noted that while sightings are uncommon, mountain lions can occasionally be seen anywhere in the state."

It will close its entire facility due to companywide financial struggles, resulting in 80 employees losing their jobs, the company states in a letter to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development.

\Many of those workers are part of the Bakery, Confectionery Tobacco Workers’ and Grain Millers International Union, Local 22.

The company, which makes iconic candies like Salted Nut Roll and Nut Goodie, is owned by the Pennsylvania-based Promise Confections. A 2022 sale pulled the company out of local ownership, but kept its prominent sign and factory in St. Paul.

A representative told the Star Tribune that the decision “was made after careful consideration and reflects the current business and economic environment."

In May, the Pioneer Press reported that rumors had circulated about a potential closure, but the company responded that it "continues to operate on its long-standing four-day production schedule, consistently manufacturing our iconic candy brands like Salted Nut Roll as we have for years."

Founded in 1909, Pearson's moved from Minneapolis to St. Paul in 1950 and into its current facility in 1959.

The rapid expansion of the drought is quite remarkable. Areas of severe drought more than double in the past week from 17 percent to 35 percent of the state. The total areas in moderate drought doubled in the last 2 weeks alone.

The driving force between the flash drought was the mid month heat dome where we saw 10 consecutive days of 90+ degree high temps and spotty or no measurable rainfall in that period. It was followed by our most recent, shorter heat wave which further dried out soils.

July average temperatures are running anywhere from 4 to 8 degrees above normal, which is a huge anomaly considering standard deviation for average July temperature is just about 2-3 degrees F. 

We are behind by more than 4 inches of rainfall year-to-date in the Twin Cities. When we look at year on year (July 2025 to July 2026), Twin Cities amounts are 4 to 8 inches behind. That’s 20 percent of annual rainfall. A similar picture is painted across the state. The most stubborn drought area, held over from last year, in north central Minnesota is behind by as much as a whopping 10 inches!

The recent heat, coupled with the strongest sun of the year has devastated the soil moisture content. In the Twin Cities, surface soils are just between 0.5 to 2 percent moisture content. 30 percent is considered adequate. You have to go down 2 to 3 feet into the soil to find that right now. 

The net effect is the most drought in the state since late October of 2024. You can see that since 2020 we’ve largely been in some frequent drought patterns. The worst drought conditions were 2023 and 2021 when nearly all of the state was in at least moderate drought. 

We do have some hopeful chances of rain ahead, namely Thursday into Friday, but it will take much more than that to alleviate drought conditions for most. The area most favored for significant rainfall overlaps the part of the state that’s the least dry in south central Minnesota.

NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) has a nifty graphic showing how much rain would be needed within a one month period to eliminate drought and it’s sobering to say the least.

In the Twin Cities, we’d need about 6 to 10 inches of rain within a one month period to eliminate the drought. In the worst area of the state, north central Minnesota, 13 to 14 inches of rain is needed.

For perspective, we average about 13 inches in an entire summer (June, July, August), our wettest period of the entire year.  It’s likely that some form of drought is sticking around for a while. 

 BMTN Note: Weather events in isolation can't always be pinned on climate change, but the broader trend of increasingly severe weather and record-breaking extremes seen in Minnesota and across the globe can be attributed directly to the rapidly warming climate caused by human activity. The IPCC has warned that Earth is "firmly on track toward an unlivable world," and says greenhouse gas emissions must be halved by 2030 in order to limit warming to 1.5C, which would prevent the most catastrophic effects on humankind. Yelp has published a ranking of the best state fairs based on the greatness of its food. The Minnesota State Fair topped the list.

The list is a result of analyzing thousands of user reviews that focus on state fair food. Scientific? Not really. Accurate? Let's go with it.

"This place has turned “everything on a stick” into a legitimate culinary movement, skewering everything from the classic corn dog to spaghetti and meatballs and even alligator," Yelp raves in its ranking.

"Plus, Sweet Martha’s Cookie Jar is the stuff of legend — people line up for their massive buckets of warm chocolate chip cookies every year."

Further down the list, the Midwest got high marks. The Wisconsin State Fair and the Iowa State Fair placed second and third, respectively.

The Minnesota State Fair begins on Aug. 27.

On Wednesday afternoon just before 2 p.m., fire crews were called to mile marker 70 on reports of a vehicle fire, with first responders discovering an Amazon van and a car fully engulfed in flames on the back of a flatbed truck, which was also hauling a motorcycle.

As fire crews were working to contain the blaze, several small fires broke out in the ditch, and law enforcement on scene helped put those out with fire extinguishers. 

In all, it took about 20 minutes to put the fire out. It’s still unclear what caused the cars to catch on fire, as no crash was reported before the flames broke out. 

No injuries were reported in the fire, but two firefighters were treated on scene due to high temperatures. 

The Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota State Patrol, and Minnesota Department of Transportation all assisted with the incident.

The news outlet reported Wednesday a deal had been reached between the Minnesota Star Tribune and Legacy Investing, the same firm behind the development of the Sleep Number Building in downtown Minneapolis into a data center for AI and cloud computing. 

The 13-acre site, located on North 1st Street, had been operational for almost 40 years, opening in the years after the 1982 merger of the Minneapolis Tribune and the Minneapolis Star. 

In September, the newspaper announced the closure of the plant, with 125 workers laid off as a result. Newspaper printing operations were then moved to Des Moines, Iowa to a facility that is run by USA Today-owner Gannett.

The sale of the land is expected to close later this year, pending city approval on a conditional use permit, according to the Star Tribune. 

In addition to a data center, Legacy Investing’s plans reportedly may include housing and retail. 

The Minneapolis Downtown Council applauded the news, saying this sort of project will create jobs, boost the city’s tax base, and help “position downtown Minneapolis for long-term growth.”

"Downtown Minneapolis is in a period of transformation, and this major redevelopment project is both exciting and critical to our city," said Downtown Council CEO and President Adam Duininck. 

"Projects like this can support broader community goals, including new investment, housing growth, economic diversification, and an increased tax base that benefits the entire city. A mixed-use data center project is a win-win for downtown Minneapolis."

But data centers have been a source of controversy across the country as cities and counties debate whether or not to welcome large-scale projects. The allure of potential tax and job benefits are often met with concerns surrounding noise and air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and extreme water usage.

Last month, Minneapolis City Council passed a temporary pause on new data center development.The six-month freeze in Minneapolis does not apply to downtown data centers that occupy less than 350,000 square feet.

At the start of her concert Wednesday, the 27-year-old pop star gave a shoutout to the legendary Purple One, whose "I Wanna Be Your Lover" she covered later in the evening, and Peanuts creator Charles Schulz.

"I love Minneapolis for a few reasons," she said. "You've created two geniuses, in my opinion.

"One is obviously Prince. The second, a personal favorite of mine, I love the guy who made Snoopy. I love Snoopy. I don't play about Snoopy, Minneapolis.

"So, tonight's show is in both of their honor."

Dean revealed that she made time to soak up some of the best the Twin Cities has to offer on Tuesday ahead of the show.

She made the pilgrimage to Paisley Park to pay her respects to Prince, perhaps making a detour along the way to purify herself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka.

"Thank you so much for stopping by! We loved having you and the team over here," the Paisley Park account commented on Dean's Instagram post, featuring a photo of her on Prince's motorcycle from "Purple Rain."

Dean caught a Minnesota Twins game at Target Field, too.

Also included in the Instagram post recapping recent stops on "The Art of Loving" tour is a photo of the Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter in a Twins jersey, posing with a red foam finger.

It appears that Dean found it's "So Easy (To Fall in Love)" with Minneapolis.

Federal and state officials told the newspaper that the attacks were "probably" the work of Iranian hackers. More than 30 community water systems across the state were targeted by cyber criminals on July 26 and 27, impacting automated controls and online capabilities.

The news comes as tensions between the two countries have remained high since late February, when the war in Iran started, with the nations continuing to trade missile strikes on Thursday.

However, the newspaper reports that officials have not definitively determined who was responsible for the attack, and that their preliminary assessment could change as more data is collected and information is learned.

Officials also said hackers could be posing as Iranians in an effort to increase tensions between the two warring countries.

Minnesota officials tell Bring Me The News that they can’t pin the attacks on a specific group at this time, citing the ongoing investigation.

Minnesota IT Services (MNIT) shared this statement on Thursday: "We are not attributing this activity to a specific actor at this time. Attribution requires careful analysis of technical evidence alongside broader national and international threat intelligence, and our federal partners are best positioned to lead that work. We understand the public interest in knowing who may be responsible, but we will not speculate while the investigation continues. Federal partners should address questions about any potential attribution."

Cities hit by the widespread attack include Plymouth, South St. Paul, Maple Plain, and Braham, with the incident prompting the state to immediately activate its cybersecurity incident response capabilities.

MNIT is also working with federal, state, local, Tribal, and private partners to investigate the widespread incident.

To date, there is no indication that the cyberattacks impacted the quality of the water in the cities that were targeted.

Brandon Witzel, Jill Mortensen and Kay Phillips initially planned to purchase a building somewhere a bit further from downtown for a second Milly's location, like in Wayzata, Edina, or St. Paul.

Witzel tells Bring Me The News that the day before they went to look at properties, a two-story building at the corner of Lowry Avenue and Second Street Northeast that he had his eye on for a year finally went up for sale.

"It was kind of, like, fate," he says. "As we were walking through it, there were plans on the table for what was going to be a wine bar, and I just kind of felt like that was saying, 'You should buy it and figure out what to do with it.'"

Coquette & Colibri, a wine bar and cafe, had previously been planned in the space.

Witzel, Mortensen and Phillips wound up purchasing the building at 200 Lowry Ave. NE for $725,000 after seeing it on Facebook Marketplace.

The trio hopes to recreate some of the magic that they've brought to Milly's, which just celebrated its third birthday, but with a slightly different focus based on what the surrounding area needs.

For example, the departure of Young Joni last September left a void, so Witzel plans to install "a massive pizza oven" in the new restaurant, which will have a bigger kitchen and menu.

Other aspects of the business, including its name, are still in progress.

Witzel envisions the restaurant functioning as a "third space" where people who live nearby choose to hang out when they're not at home or work.

"The goal is to create what we have at Milly's, where it's the neighborhood bar," he said.

There's still a lot of work to do, but if all goes according to plan, the new spot could be up and running next fall.

The Tony-winning, Pulitzer Prize finalist play has been an unexpected hit since its 2024 debut, breaking records and racking up awards, including a 2026 Olivier for best entertainment or comedy play.

On Thursday, the Ordway unveiled the actors who will take the lead in the dark comedy about Mary Todd Lincoln in the final days before her husband was assassinated. 

Alaska Thunderf***, winner of "RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars," will star as Mary Todd, a role that earned Cole Escola, who also wrote "Oh, Mary!," a Tony for best actor in a play.

The "Drag Race" star, who is also a recording artist and drag performer, made their theatrical debut in 2013, playing Dr. Frank N. Furter in a production of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." They returned to the stage in 2021 for "Head Over Heels" and a 2024 production of "Drag: The Musical."

“I’ve often been asked what my dream role would be. As an 8-foot-tall drag queen from outer space, I never really had an answer," Thunderf*** says in a statement.

"Mama Rose? I’m too tall. Evita? I’m too short. Willy Loman? Wait… that might actually be amazing. But the point is, I never had a dream role. Until I saw 'Oh, Mary!' So, it is an actual dream come true that I, Alaska Thunderf***, get to play Mary F***ing Todd in the greatest play of the generation. This is an honor. This is unbelievable."

Thunderf*** will star opposite Tony winner J. Harrison Ghee, who takes the role of "Mary's Husband." (For the less historically inclined, that's Abraham Lincoln.) 

Ghee most recently played Hermes in the Broadway production of "Hadestown," but has also earned acclaim for their turn as Lola in "Kinky Boots" and won a 2023 Tony for best actor in a musical in the role of Jerry/Daphne in "Some Like It Hot."

That nomination made Ghee one of the first openly nonbinary actors to win a Tony, along with Alex Newell.

An announcement from the Ordway adds that further casting will be announced at a later date.

"Oh, Mary!" will open at the Ordway Center for Performing Arts on Jan. 6, with a run that lasts until Jan. 17. Tickets are on sale now. 

The collision reportedly happened on Tuesday, but no one was hurt in the incident. 

Crosslake Mayor Jackson Purfeerst shared photos of the scene on social media, showing large cracks in the brick facade of the building and yellow tape surrounding the damaged area. 

Operations at the Crosslake Post Office have now been moved to Pine River indefinitely, which is located about 20 miles away. Roughly 1,000 P.O. Box customers are impacted, and will able to pick up their parcel post and mai there with a valid ID. 

Local mail will continue to be delivered as normal by the Crosslake Post Office and residents can also continue using mail collection boxes outside the location as well.; 

In an update to residents, Purfeerst said while it would have been convenient for people to access the Crosslake Post Office through the back door, officials determined it would be a security risk. 

He also stressed Crosslake has no jurisdiction in the decision to move mail operations, and that was in the hand of the federal government, which manages the postal service.

“I know this is a major disruption and certainly not convenient,” his post detailed. “I’ll continue to share updates as they become available and keep everyone informed.” 

There’s no word on how long it will take to repair the building. 

Just before 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, a 911 caller reported the crash near Drexel Avenue (County Road 15) and 235th Street.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they learned that a Harley-Davidson motorcycle was headed northbound on Drexel Avenue when it veered off the road as it enter a curve, hitting an embankment and driveway approach.

A bystander who witnessed the crash performed CPR on the victim until first responders arrived, but the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim has been identified by authorities as Dale Donald Sibbet, 71, of Jordan.

Investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash, but added that Sibbet was not wearing a helmet.

The crash remains under investigation.

A significant precipitation system is expected to enter the state on Thursday evening and continue through much of Friday, and the National Weather Service says it could bring local amounts of 4+ inches of rain.

The heaviest rain appears to be making a beeline for the Minnesota River Valley in southwest and southern Minnesota, with the NWS noting that "localized flooding is possible, especially in low-lying or flood-prone areas."

"Not everyone is going to see 4+ inches of rain, but there certainly is a good signal that some areas will," the NWS Twin Cities says in its forecast discussion.

"Both physical and computer based guidance have focused in the MN River Valley (roughly from Granite Falls to Mankato) as the likely corridor for pockets of the heaviest
rainfall amounts.

"This is the area where the deepest moisture overlaps with the greatest vorticity aloft."

Despite this, the NWS says it has held off on issuing a flood watch because of the recent dry conditions combined with the "slow-moving nature of this system" – with rain falling over a longer period rather than quickly – as well as most of the heavy rain likely to fall on farmland.

"We felt that any flooding will likely be localized to any fast responding creeks and streams or low-lying areas."

What about the Twin Cities?

It feels like winter again, in a way, with the Twin Cities metro appearing to be on the cusp of rain much in the way it is for snow.

The latest model runs do indicate the heavy band of rain stretching southeast from western Minnesota to south, but as you can see, there appears to be somewhat of a cliff in the metro area.

Areas in the western and southwestern metro have a chance of seeing 1+ inch of rain should the Euro prove accurate, with the amount of rain reducing to the north and east.

But the short-range model HRRR is hinting at the chance that the rain will peter out as it approaches the metro, and only around a quarter-inch of rain could fall.

Anyone with a garden, or indeed anyone who wants plants and trees to flourish during the summer, will be hoping the outcome is closer to the Euro than to the HRRR, with the Twin Cities and much of Minnesota now in drought conditions, per a Thursday update by the U.S. Drought Monitor Index.

New foods and drinks steal the headlines, but each year, the fair adds new rides, attractions, exhibits, themes, and vendors.

Here's a look at what's new at the 2026 Minnesota State Fair, no pickles included.

The America Wheel

From the ashes of the Great Big Wheel rises the America Wheel. The observation wheel sits 230 feet above the fairgrounds' North End. (Why not 250 feet?)

It's the world's largest traveling observation wheel and is 75 feet higher than the Great Big Wheel that previously sat at the fair. It's not only bigger, but America-ier. It celebrates the 250th anniversary of the country's founding with displays honoring U.S. presidents, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and national parks.

Dinosaurs!

No, it's not a tribute to Sam Neill. (At least, it's not an intentional one. What you do on your time at the fair is your business). This new exhibit from the Science Museum of Minnesota has real fossils and life-size casts, as well as augmented-reality displays and opportunities to talk dino-shop with paleontologists. It's at the North End Event Center and open daily. Though, paleontologists have select hours.

Films at the Fair

Square Lake Film and Music is setting up for five nights of Minnesota-helmed short films and animations, dubbed Films at the Fair. A different program of curated films will be shown Aug. 28-29 and Sept. 4–6 at 8 p.m. in the Pet Pavilion. There will also be discussions with the filmmakers following the screenings, should time permit.

New rides!

Hold onto your butts, there will be four new rides this year, with two debuting at both the Midway and the Kidway.

At the Mighty Midway, channel your inner Erling Haaland with Thor, a massive hammer-like ride with vomit-inducing spins. The Juke Box Funhouse will also debut, with a musical twist on the familiar funhouse.

At the Kidway, Pirate Jet puts a swashbuckling twist on a jet ride, and the Ghost Pirate Dark Ride features some PG-rated scares. No walking the plank will be required.

More America!

The fair isn't simply bringing America250 flair with the America Wheel, but with festive additions throughout the fairgrounds. There will be a victory garden-inspired garden near Gate 16, patriotic themes for various competitions, walking tours, the "George Washington and a Nation of Farmers" exhibit at the History & Heritage Center, the annual Military Appreciation Day, and the newly renovated and more accessible Veterans Garden.

Cultural Destinations Day

On Sept. 6, four Minnesota-based cultural festivals will put their traditions, music, and dance on display. The fair's announcement says the partners include the Little Africa Fest, Fiesta Latina, the Slavic Experience, and the International Festival of Minnesota.

A renovated Coliseum

It's not dinosaurs, but it's exciting in its own way. The first major renovation in the 75-year history of the Lee & Rose Warner Coliseum is complete. (It was closed in 2025.) The $24 million renovation included a roof replacement, new arena seats, a display of the building's history, and improved accessibility.

Accessibility enhancements

You may have noticed above that some of the new features listed above include accessibility enhancements. Those aren't the only ones debuting this year. The fair has added more ASL interpretation for live music events, human guides for vision-impaired visitors, more pre-recorded audio descriptions, Braille signage at the Ultimate Dinosaurs exhibit, and a second prayer and meditation tent, among other features.

A message posted on OpenTable lists CRAVE Fargo as permanently closed effective on Monday. A West Acres representative also confirmed the closure to Bring Me The News.

No reason for the closure was listed and the North Dakota location was also removed for their website.

Popular for its happy hour offerings, sushi bar, and signature cocktails, the Eden Prairie-based restaurant chain has locations across Minnesota, Iowa, and South Dakota. 

It’s still unclear how many employees were impacted by the closure and what will take its place at the mall. 

"While it can be disappointing when a business closes, our thoughts are with the local employees affected, and we appreciate the years CRAVE served our guests and community," said a West Acres spokesperson in a statement.

"West Acres remains well-positioned, with strong occupancy and continued interest from retailers and restaurants. Closures are a natural part of the retail lifecycle, and they also create opportunities to bring new concepts and experiences to our community. We are already evaluating future opportunities for the space and look forward to welcoming another great addition to our dining lineup."

Visitors will be able to see the 10-week-old female kittens, Freya and Ingrid, for the first time in their habitat on the Minnesota Trail later this summer.

The two sisters and a brother who's been transferred to a different zoo were born on May 14 to first-time mother Torvi and father Cad Bane.

"Around 16 days old, the kittens opened their eyes, and by about three weeks of age they were standing and moving around independently," the Apple Valley zoo said in an announcement Wednesday.

"During their time together behind the scenes, they explored more of their habitat, began eating solid foods, and developed distinct personalities. One kitten quickly emerged as a bold explorer, while another preferred to watch before joining in the fun."

Sadly, the Minnesota Zoo also announced that Torvi developed a rare medical condition shortly after giving birth to the kittens and was euthanized her due to her worsening condition and poor prognosis.

"Torvi was an exceptional first-time mother who gave her kittens a wonderful start," reads a statement from Breanne Barney, curator of the Tropics and Minnesota Trails. "While we're heartbroken by her loss, we're grateful to see the kittens continue to thrive. Their resilience is a testament to the outstanding care provided by our Animal Care and Health teams."

Slightly larger than a bobcat, the Canada lynx is a rare wildcat in Minnesota, where only a small breeding population occurs in the northeastern part of the state. It's more commonly found across the boreal forests of Canada and Alaska.

Lynx have been protected in Minnesota since 1984 and classified as a federally threatened species since 2000.

Paul Kess was on his way to the hospital when the ambulance carrying him collided with a bull moose on Highway 169 west of Ely on April 27. The incident was widely reported, with the Star Tribune adding that the ambulance personnel divided up the moose meat following the crash.

Kess had to be taken back to the Ely ER to wait for another ambulance while his condition worsened. He was eventually taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth, where he suffered multiple seizures and had to be intubated. 

An MRI revealed a mass on Kess’ brain, and he was later diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer. A GoFundMe was created to support Kess, a former community college teacher and city council member, as he received treatment. 

Kess underwent surgery but did not recover, according to the fundraiser. On July 13, Kess was taken back home to Ely to receive hospice care. 

Kess died “peacefully with family by his side” on July 29, according to an update from his son. 

“Thank you all for the caring words and support throughout this difficult time. All the acts of kindness we have received are greatly appreciated,” the update read. 

The shooting was reported just before midnight on the 200 block of 7th Street East, with St. Paul police officers arriving to find two men with gunshot wounds.

One of them had been shot in the stomach, and he died shortly after arriving at Regions Hospital.

The second victim was found in a nearby apartment with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg, and he was taken to Regions for treatment.

"Saint Paul Police homicide investigators are working to determine what led up to the shooting," St. Paul PD said in a press release. "No arrests have been made at this time."

The shooting marks the 12th homicide of the year so far in St. Paul.

In a statement issued Wednesday night, Her also said some of the inappropriate comments she has been accused of making were simply jokes.

We have fully cooperated with the independent investigation since it began in April and will continue to do so. I remain confident that the full facts will come to light, and I will continue to focus on serving the people of St. Paul with integrity and dedication."

The bombshell accusations emerged late Tuesday and have rocked St. Paul City Hall, where Her has served as the city’s first female mayor for just 7 months. 

As first reported by the Minnesota Star Tribune, Police Chief Axel Henry, through his attorney Chris Madel, informed City Attorney Irene Kao of his intentions to file a formal complaint against Her in a letter dated April 1, 2026. 

The letter alleges Her “engaged in illegal conduct towards City employees,” and used various cell phones to communicate “inappropriate, and indeed unlawful text messages.” 

It also includes a screenshot of a text message apparently sent by Her, saying “Happy Weiner Wednesday! Wish I was having a (hot dog emoji) with you all on 6 today!” 

The message includes a meme appearing to show a baby wrapped in a swaddle with the caption, “When she wraps you up in her blanket after you gave her a good weinering.” 

The Minnesota Star Tribune reports the meme altered the image of the baby’s head, instead showing the face of a St. Paul Police officer assigned to Her’s security detail. 

KARE 11 also reports Her is alleged to have commented on the breasts of a female deputy police chief in a locker room and asked the woman her thoughts on Her’s breasts, and would make "sex noises" while stretching in front of police officers in the department weight room.

It is still unclear when the independent investigation into Her’s alleged conduct will wrap up, and if the findings will be made public. 

Her won a historic upset victory in the race for St. Paul Mayor, defeating incumbent Melvin Carter. After a long career in finance, Her served as a policy aide for Carter, before being elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives for District 64A in 2018. 

Throughout her campaign, Her focused on revitalizing downtown, making the city more business-friendly, and keeping communities safe.

Earlier this year, similar conduct, a former friend of Her filed for an emergency restraining order, accusing the Mayor of asking probing questions about her sex life, and texting at all hours, according to the Pioneer Press. A legal referee ultimately denied the petition.

In a Tuesday post on social media, festival founder and owner of Amoré Antiques Brandon Altenweg that the event will come to an end. The event had been scheduled for Oct. 3 at the Anoka City Hall River Plaza and Riverfront Memorial Park.

“I’m sorry to inform you, but I’ve had to make the hard decision to end Anoka Vintage Fest,” reads the announcement. 

“AVF wasn’t just a great day in Anoka, but a great day for the north metro as well. I’d rather it didn’t go away, but the workload and the time it was going to take has been weighing on me for months now.”

Each year, the event featured vintage vendors, live music, and food trucks. Additionally, early promotions for 2026 touted the return of a classic car show. 

Altenweg's announcement, which adds that the event raised more than $12,000 for the veteran-focused Haven for Heroes charity, goes on to say he’s open to transferring stewardship if individuals or groups are interested in keeping the event going for future years.

The crash happened just after 6 a.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Highway 169 at and 221st Street Northwest, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

A Mitsubishi Lancer was south on Highway 169 when it collided with a northbound Sterling dump truck in the left turn lane to go west on 221st Avenue Northwest.

The Mitsubishi driver, who was wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene. He's been identified as Brayden Michael Grunzke, 18, of Zimmerman.

The dump truck driver, a 64-year-old man from Rockford, did not sustain any injuries.

Conditions were dry at the time of the crash. Alcohol is not suspected as a factor.

An investigation by the Minnesota State Patrol is ongoing.
