The first of what became a fleet of restaurants for Jester Concepts, Borough will have its final day of service at 730 N. Washington Ave. on June 27. Following a renovation, the space will become the home of the first Revival since the restaurant group purchased the fried chicken brand last year.

No opening date for Revival has been set, but the group is targeting September, a representative tells Bring Me The News.

Borough opened in 2013 and quickly became a hub in the Twin Cities' food world, earning praise for its menu and serving as an incubator for culinary talent. Shortly afterward, its sister concept, Parlour, opened in the basement and eventually expanded to four locations.

"Borough has meant so much to our company, our team, and the Minneapolis dining community," Jester co-founder Brent Frederick says. "We are incredibly proud of what Borough represented over the last 13 years and grateful to every guest, employee, and partner who has been part of its story."

As some Twin Cities restaurants pivot toward affordability, value, and a more neighborhood eatery vibe, Revival may bring some of that feeling into the building, compared to the more upscale Borough.

The fried chicken-focused concept was founded in 2015 by Nick Rancone and Thomas Boemer, who operated multiple locations before abruptly closing last spring.

Just months later, Jester Concepts purchased the brand and fueled up the Revival food truck.

During the remodel, Parlour's North Loop location will also temporarily close to get its own updates. It's scheduled to reopen on July 6.

The company notes that it's looking to support staff through the transition, offering work at other Jester Concepts restaurants, which include P.S. Steak, Butcher and the Boar, Char Bar, Starling, Mirabelle, Shiki, and three Rustica bakeries.

Wild general manager Bill Guerin spoke to the media earlier this week, and he reiterated the need for a top-line center. There was also a report this week that they tried to get Robert Thomas from the Blues in a swap for rookie goaltender Jesper Wallstedt and young forward Danila Yurov before the trade deadline, but there was obviously no deal.

Rangers veteran Vincent Trocheck was a hot name at the trade deadline, and there have been constant rumors about Jack Hughes since his brother Quinn Hughes joined the team as well. Johnson is now an analyst for ESPN, and he thinks Minnesota could aim bigger. He appeared on The Pat McAfee Show on Wednesday, and he had a hot take that you have to hear to believe.

"I think one of Auston Matthews or Connor McDavid will be on the Minnesota Wild in the next three years... That's my hot take. I think they're going to find a way," he said. "They need a center. That's Minnesota's clear Achilles heel. They need a No. 1 center."

The buzz around Matthews has continued to heat up since Toronto missed the playoffs entirely this season, and that franchise appears to be entering a new era. Thinking Guerin could bring McDavid to Minnesota is an extra spicy hot take.

Matthews has two seasons remaining on a four-year, $53 million contract, so he could theoretically join the Wild as a free agent in 2028, and it would still fit Johnson's claim. McDavid is on a similar timeline with his new two-year, $25 million contract starting next season.

Guerin has shown a willingness to be aggressive and think outside the box with his blockbuster deal for Hughes last December. A move for Matthews or McDavid might seem dangerously optimistic, but as he pointed out during his presser, "Nobody in this game is untouchable."

McDavid is already one of the most talented players the sport has ever seen, but he's still in search of a Stanley Cup to prove his place among the best. He'll be only 32 when his current contract ends, so joining a team like Minnesota might be more realistic than you think. Trading for a player of his caliber becomes far more complicated.

Matthews is also among the most recognizable and best players in the world. He will be 31 at the end of his current contract. A trade for either player would have to include significant assets, similar to the deal it took to bring Hughes to Minnesota.

Will the Wild trade for McDavid or Matthews this offseason? Probably not, but it's clear that well-connected people across the league know that Guerin is aggressive, and the Wild badly need a top-line center. It would be hard to find many top-line centers better than McDavid or Matthews.

Officers responded to the crash involving a pedestrian just before 12:30 a.m. Monday on the 1800 block of Ninth Avenue North, near Whitney Recreation Center and St. Cloud Technical & Community College, according to the St. Cloud Police Department.

A preliminary investigation determined that a 61 year-old Sauk Rapids woman was driving northbound on Ninth Avenue North when she hit a pedestrian, identified as Tammy Hamby, also of Sauk Rapids, who was walking in the northbound lanes of traffic.

Paramedics found Hamby unconscious and not breathing. They performed lifesaving measures on the woman at the scene until she could be transported by ambulance to St. Cloud Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

St. Cloud PD is continuing to investigate the incident.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says the body of Roger Shanielle Ellis Jr., 31, was found last Thursday. No other details regarding his death were immediately made available. 

Ellis Jr. was last seen in the area of Snelling Avenue and Thomas Avenue in St. Paul in November.

The St. Paul Police Department had been investigating his disappearance. It confirms Ellis was positively identified by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office and the results of his autopsy are pending.

A department spokesperson tells Bring Me The News there is currently no indication this was a homicide, but the case is being classified as an active open death investigation.

While the band has been around for a long time — they released their first EP in 1991 — shows and albums have been few and far between. That was even the case after the band released the album "Unt" in 2024, their first LP since 1997.

However, they're back together and have announced a tour that will start in Minneapolis. That Oct. 7 gig at First Avenue will be the start of a 12-date North American jaunt.

Over the last two decades, the band has played just a handful of shows, per Concert Archives, making this trek a rare chance to see Pinhead Gunpowder.

Tickets for the First Avenue show go on sale at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 21.

Jordan Zempel, 35, of Apple Valley, is facing one count of criminal sexual conduct after authorities allegedly uncovered his sexual relationship with a teenage girl he met online. 

Criminal charges state a therapist made a mandated report to law enforcement and first alerted police to the relationship. 

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension took over the investigation, and spoke with the 17-year-old victim, who said she met Zempel online and their conversations turned sexual quickly. 

While she told Zempel she was 18, she never showed him an ID and he saw her in pictures from her high school. It was well known that he was in law enforcement, and he referred to having power and guns in their conversations, the charges allege.

The first time the two met in September 2025, Zempel allegedly pulled a gun out and said, "You’re safer with me than anyone else." He also showed her his badge, taser, vest, and at one point, handcuffed her.

He accused of sexually assaulting the teen three times, and reportedly wore his police uniform during the third encounter. 

After he was stopped by authorities, Zempel made comments to officers indicating his relationship with the victim, like looking up the state statute. 

He also allegedly said: "I kind of get what is going on here and I get that position of authority thing. I get that, I saw that too."

Zempel resigned from the Hill City Police Department in March. 

In a resignation letter submitted to the city council, Zempel wrote he had "many difficult conversations these past months and my family and I have concluded that the distance from my residence and length of time away is not what is best for us at this time."

Zempel is not currently in custody. His first court appearance is scheduled for June 8.

Superintendent Matt Schoen tells Bring Me The News that an encrypted ransomware message began printing off on printers throughout the school district on Tuesday morning, with the same message on each piece of paper. 

The district’s IT department immediately recognized the attack, and shut down the district's online systems. School officials then made the decision to close school on Wednesday to address the incident. 

Schoen confirmed students will be back in session on Thursday for in-person learning, but internet access will be limited to hard lines, so WiFi will not be available. 

He adds the district is confident no student, staff, or Google classroom information was accessed during the cyber attack.

This marks the latest instance of cyber criminals attacking local government and school districts.

Last month, a ransomware attack targeting Spring Lake Park Schools forced district leaders to cancel classes for a day.

On Thursday, council members will again consider reallocating $6.1 million to purchase a 4.7-acre site in the Windom neighborhood for the Community Safety Training and Wellness Center, a controversial proposal that critics are calling a "cop city."

Unless the city moves forward with a purchase agreement in May, the site owner plans to nullify a letter of intent reached in September and no longer consider selling the parcel to the city, according to Director of Property Services Barbara O’Brien, who spoke during a Committee of the Whole meeting on Tuesday.

O’Brien reiterated that site control is needed in order to start the design process, which would require additional approval from the council. She said there are two other Minneapolis sites currently on the market that are comparable in size and zoning, though both of their asking prices are around $10 million.

After debating the project for more than an hour, the Committee of the Whole voted unanimously on Tuesday to forward the issue without recommendation to the City Council, which last considered the site acquisition on March 26, when it narrowly passed a motion to refer the item back to staff, delaying a vote.

Concerns from community members include potential safety issues with the facility's gun range and how the city will fund the $38 million project.

Council Member Robin Wonsley argues that the Minneapolis Police Department is already on pace to outspend its budget by $22 million, a sticking point in the proposed reappointment of Police Chief Brian O'Hara, and that the city should instead invest in schools or affordable housing.

"Minneapolis residents have made it loud and clear that this is a waste of $40 million," Wonsley said in a recent Facebook post. "In the aftermath of ICE's occupation, we have far more pressing priorities for our communities."

Frey's reappointment of Community Safety Commissioner Todd Barnette is on the agenda for Thursday's City Council meeting but O'Hara's reappointment is not.

In April, the council voted 7-6 against a second term for Barnette, then Frey vetoed the decision, putting his reappointment in limbo until a compromise can be reached.

That same vote on Thursday could dash the city's acquisition of the Windom site for the Community Safety Training and Wellness Center, with the council's more progressive majority expected to vote against it.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) filed the lawsuit Tuesday, a day after Gov. Tim Walz signed into law a public safety bill that includes the ban, which goes into effect at the beginning of August.

Minnesota became the first state to ban prediction markets after related legislation passed through the House and Senate with bipartisan support.

Rep. Emma Greenman (D-Minneapolis) introduced the House bill and is one of its authors, along with Rep. Greg Davids (R-Preston) and three other Democrats, who want to prevent insider trading and curb gambling addition, common concerns with prediction markets.

Lawmakers also argue that prediction markets circumvent state gambling laws by claiming that they're using "event contracts" instead of bets. That includes some who are in favor of legalizing sports betting.

“It is critical we act this year to address this explosion of gambling on almost anything and reign in these Big Tech billionaires who skirt the law to circumvent our state authority and hurt our children just to line their own pockets," Greenman said in a statement when the ban was added to the public safety package in late April.

In its lawsuit, the CFTC argues that prediction markets fall under federal oversight, and that Minnesota's new law undermines the commission's “exclusive jurisdiction over commodity derivatives.”

CFTC Chairman Michael S. Selig claims that the ban hurts farmers who use derivatives markets to offset risks by betting on crop yields and weather.

“This Minnesota law turns lawful operators and participants in prediction markets into felons overnight,” Selig said in a statement. “Minnesota farmers have relied on critical hedging products on weather and crop-related events for decades to mitigate their risks. Governor Walz chose to put special interests first and American farmers and innovators last.”

The Minnesota Reformer reports that an earlier version of the state's bill to ban prediction markets prohibited betting on weather events and catastrophes, but concerns about how the ban would affect futures markets were addressed in a last-minute revision to allow weather betting.

The CFTC has already sued five other states over their laws seeking to regulate prediction markets, including Wisconsin and Illinois.

President Donald Trump's oldest son, Donald Trump Jr., serves as an adviser to Kalshi and Polymarket.

Daniel Christian Pettit, 48, of Orr, is accused of striking the aircraft on Friday afternoon while it was conducting wildfire suppression activities.

After returning to the Range Regional Airport in Hibbing after conducting dozens of water drops, the plane’s pilot noticed there was damage to the aircraft's rudder. 

The pilot told authorities he had descended to scoop water from Kjostad Lake when he heard a pop sound, and thought it may have been a bird strike or a noise from flying through the lead plane's wake. 

There were no issues with the plane’s instruments or controls, so the pilot continued on his mission, and it was only after landing that he noticed the plane had been shot. 

Based on the location of the shooting, a police investigator suspected Pettit may have been involved, because he had been “annoyed” with float planes flying over a home in 2024, per criminal charges.

Detectives also spoke with several nearby residents, who reported hearing multiple “bangs” during the time of the reported shooting. 

Pettit was taken into custody, and voluntarily spoke with police. He said he was crow hunting on Friday, and had seen on the news that he may have hit an airplane. 

He also said he believed it was against FAA regulation to fly below 500 feet of a residential home, but that he had video of the plane flying right above the roof of his home. 

Pettit said he probably fired at the planes more than five times, "but he did not fire his gun when he could see them,” according to charges. 

He went on to say: "If I accidentally hit him crow hunting, too bad. He endangered my life. I decided to go outside and crow hunt. Did I aim and try and shoot the plane? Nope, no I didn't."

Pettit is currently in custody and is being held on $150,000 bail.

He'll be going out with a bang, with the announcement that one day before his final show on May 22, he'll be hosting the Morning Show live from the Mall of America. 

On Thursday, May 21, Ryan will be joined by friends and former show members for an on-air farewell celebration, broadcasting from the Huntington Bank Rotunda in the Bloomington shopping center.

In 2025, Minnesota had 10 entries in the 250-city list, with Plymouth leading the way at 17th. This year, only eight cities made the cut, and all of them placed lower than last year. 

The majority of the state's entries are once again around the Twin Cities suburbs, with Plymouth placing highest at 31st. However, there were exceptions in Rochester and Mankato.

In addition to an overall ranking, the list is also broken down by small, mid-sized, and big cities, with Plymouth placing 19th on the best small cities breakout.

Notably, Bloomington (215th last year) and Duluth (237th last year) fell off the list entirely. They join Minneapolis and St. Paul as cities that didn't make the cut, despite once again being praised by the Trust for Public Land as two of the best park systems in the country.

As has been the case in the past, larger cities didn't fare as well as small and mid-sized towns in general. Only 10 of the top 100 cities had a population of more than 200,00. 

Though it's notable that there were only five above that mark in 2025, and none above 273,000. This year, Omaha (pop. 491,055); Chandler, Ariz. (pop. 277,492); El Paso, Texas (pop. 664,801); Plano, Texas (pop. 295,296); and Gilbert, Ariz. (pop. 278,573) all made the top 100.

Meanwhile, St. Paul, home of cool jackets and the fun baseball team, rose to fourth place after finishing fifth in 2025. 

The high placement from both cities has become expected, as they have consistently placed in the top five in recent years.

After finishing first in 2020, Minneapolis was third in 2021 and fifth in 2022. St. Paul placed third in 2024 and second in 2023, 2022, and 2021. 

The cities are scored on a fleet of factors, but the nonprofit Trust for Public Land notes that one reason for the high placement is the ubiquity of parks. Across the Twin Cities, 99% of residents live within a 10-minute walk from a park. That's far ahead of the national average of 76%. 

St. Paul's modest rise is further attributed to "additional parks funding secured through the city's 'common Cent' 1% sales tax measure," the Trust says in an announcement. The city spends about $309 per person on its parks, an increase from $248 last year.

In Minneapolis, the city spends about $346 per person. The national average is $154.

“We are honored to be recognized as one of the top park systems in the nation for the twelfth year in a row. Our parks shine a light on our commitment to sustainability and equity in Saint Paul," St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her says. "We cannot underestimate the role parks play in creating a thriving, resilient city where people want to live, work, play and invest.”  

The annual list ranks the 100 most populous cities in the United States based on a variety of factors that center on parks, from accessibility to amenities and ubiquity.

In its report, the Trust for Public Land notes that parks have an impressive ROI, delivering $3 in benefits for every $1 invested nationally.

The nonprofit says the physical activity provided by parks reduces health care costs, they offer green infrastructure to save money on flood control and other public works, and save residents money on activities they might otherwise pay for. 

Josephine Ann Powers, 27, was sentenced to 261 months in prison on Tuesday after pleading guilty to second-degree intentional murder in February. She will receive credit for nearly two years already served. 

Power’s accomplice in the crime, Christopher Michael Hawkins, has also pleaded guilty to aiding an offender after the fact. His sentencing is scheduled for June. 

Powers shot and killed Michael R. Riccio of Minneapolis, at her father’s Burnsville home, later arranging for his body to be moved to Minneapolis. 

His remains were later discovered by investigators inside a shed, concealed in a container where Hawkins kept his belongings. An autopsy later confirmed Riccio died of a single gunshot wound to the head.

According to a criminal complaint, Powers called police herself in July 2024, initially claiming another person had shot and killed Riccio in the home approximately 10 days prior. Her father was away on a two-week vacation at the time.

In an interview with investigators, Hawkins said that Powers told him "a guy was f****** with her and she could not take it anymore, so she shot him."

In the days following the murder, Powers asked Hawkins to help her move a package in exchange for a pickup truck. When he arrived at the home, he saw blood and what he believed to be a body wrapped in rugs and garbage bags. He then transported it to the shed in Minneapolis.

Another male who witnessed the shooting also told police Powers and Riccio began to argue in the bedroom the day of the murder and Powers’ began to throw things at Riccio before she grabbed a black handgun and shot him.

KSTP spoke with Powers’ father in 2024, who said his daughter and Riccio would fix up cars together. 

Amos Ferrier, 38, of Spring Lake Park, died at Hennepin County Medical Center on Sunday, two days after he suffered a serious head injury during a confrontation with two suspects who were trying to steal his vehicle around 1:35 p.m. Friday, outside the coffee shop located on the 5400 block of 43rd Avenue South in the Nokomis East neighborhood, according to police.

During the confrontation, the suspects returned to the vehicle that they had arrived in, and Ferrier somehow ended up on the hood, either because he was struck by the vehicle or jumped onto the hood himself.

The suspects, women, ages 18 and 19, fled the scene in the car they arrived in, with Ferrier on the hood as they took off. Police described the moment, saying the suspects were driving “evasively, causing the victim to be thrown from the hood of the vehicle and sustain a serious head injury."

Every Third Saturday founder Tom McKenna told the Minnesota Star Tribune that Ferrier was attending a Warriors Return ceremony in the building that the nonprofit shares with Rick's Coffee Bar when he saw people trying to steal his truck and ran outside to stop them.

The suspects were later arrested in St. Paul and booked into the Hennepin County Jail.

Bring Me The News typically doesn't name suspects until they have been formally charged with a crime.

“The loss suffered by the family and loved ones of Amos Ferrier in this horrific incident cannot be undone,” said Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara. “But the apprehension of those believed to be responsible brings hope that justice will be achieved. I am grateful for the coordinated efforts of investigators and community members that led to these arrests.”

MPD classified Ferrier's death as a homicide. It's believed to be the first death related to a car theft in Minneapolis this year.

Ferrier worked as the internship director for Every Third Saturday, a veterans organization that runs Rick's Coffee Bar. Before that, he served as an Army medic for 15 years, according to the nonprofit.

"We don’t have co-workers at ETS, we have family members. Amos was our brother," reads a Monday post from the organization.

"During his time at ETS, he impacted all of our lives with his humor, infectious laugh, and abundance of knowledge. Amos was the kind of person you always wanted to see and have a chat with. He will leave a hole in both his biological family and his ETS family that can never be filled."

Ferrier would have turned 39 on Tuesday, with Every Third Saturday wishing him a "happy heavenly birthday" on Facebook.

"Words cannot express how much we love you," the post continues.

A memorial featuring flowers, American flags, and a white cross that Ferrier made himself is now growing outside Rick's Coffee Bar, per KSTP.

The coffee shop closed Monday but is expected to reopen next week.

On Monday, police were called to Horizon Middle School after multiple students became sick after eating candy that another student had brought to school. In all, 10 kids ate the candy, and some felt nauseous after consuming it, according to city officials.

School staff called emergency personnel, and two kids were taken to the hospital to be treated. The rest of the students went home with their parents or guardians.

Investigators believe the candy contained THC, the primary compound in cannabis that makes you high.

On Wednesday, investigators announced the arrest of two adults, the parents of the child who brought the candy to school.

After executing a search warrant at their residence, they found "prohibited amounts of suspected THC products in the form of flower, cartridges, and wax, along with psychedelic mushrooms and large amounts of cash," according to a news release.

Both individuals are facing drug charges, and have been taken to Clay County Jail. The kids living in the home have been referred to Clay County Social Services.

“This is a really unfortunate situation," Moorhead Police Chief Chris Helmick said in a statement, adding that parents should speak with their children about not eating any candy or food if they don’t know what’s in it.

The Minnesota Twins and All Elite Wrestling have announced "Brawl in the Ballpark," a wrestling show hosted in Target Field following the Twins-Angels game on Friday, July 10.

Every ticket holder will have access to the show, and limited special ticket packages – which comes with a Lucha mask hat and VIP ringside access – are now on sale.

The event was announced ahead of Tuesday's 2-1 loss to the Houston Astros at Target Field, with AEW tag-team Top Flight (comprising Twin Cities natives Dante and Darius Martin) on the field for the reveal.

Unfortunately, they were rudely interrupted by wrestling legend and fellow AEW star Jeff Jarrett, who proceeded to smash a guitar over Darius Martin's head before calling the Twins fans in attendance "nothing but a bunch of pathetic losers."

It's the latest effort launched by the Twins to attract fans to the ballpark amid sub-par performances so far this season. Last week, the team announced that Ludacris will perform after the Twins' June 26 game against the Colorado Rockies.

AEW is the wrestling promotion started in 2019 by Tony Khan, the son of Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shahid Khan. It was set up to provide an alternative and rival to WWE.

Its current batch of wrestling stars include Maxwell Jacob Friedman (aka MJF), Kenny Omega, Chris Jericho, world champion Darby Allin, Jon Moxley (formerly Dean Ambrose), Adam Copeland (aka Edge), Samoa Joe, Swerve Strickland, Timeless Toni Storm, and women's world champion Thekla.

The Minneapolis retailer reported a 5.6% increase in comparable sales between February and April and raised its full year guidance to 4% net sales growth, up from 2% previously predicted.

This compares to last year's first quarter results that saw comparable sales decline 3.8% amid a customer backlash from the retailer's decision to scrap a series of diversity initiatives, as well as early uncertainty over global import tariffs enacted by President Donald Trump, which the courts have since declared illegal.

In the earnings call Wednesday, recently appointed CEO Michael Fiddelke said that the company does not want to "get out over our skis" as shoppers remain cautious at a time the U.S. and Israel war in Iran has sent fuel prices skyrocketing, driving up prices for the wider retail economy.

Financial analysts say the U.S. has shifted towards a "K-shaped economy," in which the country's richest residents are expanding their wealth and spending, while the poorest are struggling to pay their bills amid rising prices.

Still, Fiddelke acknowledged that Target's first quarter performance was "stronger than expected."

"While we're pleased with our Q1 performance, our focus remains on building consistent, long-term growth, and we recognize there is much more work in front of us," he said. "As we look ahead, we're focused on staying disciplined and flexible in an uncertain operating environment and continuing to invest boldly in our team, capabilities, and an elevated guest experience to unlock our full potential over time."

Fiddelke credited efforts to revamp the retailer's merchandise assortment with the sales boost, with the company adding thousands of new health and wellness, baby, food, and toy items over the past year, and entered the year with a more robust inventory than 12 months ago.

"The thing that we see consumers responding to is when we get that combination of style, design, and value right, and especially responding to some of the newness that we're bringing in the assortment," he said during a Wednesday morning earnings call.

While Target expects net sales to grow every quarter of the year, CFO Jim Lee cautioned that the second quarter results may be more muted compared to the first, as last year's performance was boosted by the release of the Nintendo Switch 2.

At about 12:35 p.m. Saturday, the Benton County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene at the intersection of Mayhew Lake Road NE and 10th Street NE in Sauk Rapids, where a motorcyclist reportedly had significant injuries and was unconscious.

First responders provided immediate medical care to the motorcyclist, Meghan Lee Moran, whose injuries were determined to be life-threatening.

Moran was taken by ambulance to St. Cloud Hospital, where she later was pronounced dead.

The other driver, a 60-year-old St. Cloud man behind the wheel of a minivan, did not sustain any injuries in the crash.

Investigators learned that Moran was riding a motorcycle southbound on Mayhew Lake Road NE, while the minivan driver was heading westbound on 10th Street NE prior to the crash.

The man told police that he stopped at a stop sign at the intersection, where he apparently did not realize that traffic on Mayhew Lake Road NE has no stop sign and maintains the right-of-way over vehicles on 10th Street NE.

Police say the man "drove into the intersection, believing the road was clear for him to proceed," then his minivan struck the left side of Moran's motorcycle.

Investigators did not notice any signs of impairment from either driver.

No charges have been filed, though the crash remains under investigation.

It's a ranking that has many of the expected (and deserving) names — The Clash, Ramones, The Stooges, Bad Brains, Sleater-Kinney — as well as a few more recent releases from bands like IDLES, Iceage, Paramore, and Against Me. 

Amid the legends and discussion-inducing younger bands — Turnstile at 39? — are a couple of foundational Minnesota punk acts. And, yes, they're exactly the ones you're thinking. 

The Replacements' "Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash" clocked in at 29th on the list. Even Rolling Stone acknowledges that picking their 1981 debut might surprise fans of the band's most popular records. 

"The boys went on to greater glories, with 'Let It Be' and 'Tim,' but 'Sorry Ma' is where their legend begins," critic Rob Sheffield writes in the 'Mats entry.

A little further up the list, Hüsker Dü's "Zen Arcade" arrives at No. 13.

"At a time when it was still controversial to learn a fourth chord, they dropped a double-vinyl concept album, telling the story of a young guy escaping a broken home and making his way in the city," Sheffield writes.

Both bands just got a single entry, but that was the case for almost every band on the list, with the exception of The Clash and Ramones. 

While just two Minnesota-founded bands made the list, a good handful of the artists on there have stops planned for the Twin Cities in 2026, including L7, The Damned, John Doe and Exene Cervenka of X, Sex Pistols (sans Johnny Rotten), Public Image Ltd. (with Johnny Rotten), Social Distortion, The Damned, Descendents, and Sleater-Kinney, as well as Mike Watt of The Minutemen, who will play with Mike Watt and the Missingmen at Caterwaul in June.

Gaïtas has been an associate justice of the court since her previous appointment in 2024. Prior to that, she served as a judge on the Minnesota Court of Appeals and Hennepin County District Court, and worked as a public defender.

Chief Justice Natalie Hudson is retiring in a few months ahead of her 70th birthday early next year. That's the mandatory retirement age for justices on the Minnesota Supreme Court.

“Justice Gaïtas will be an exceptional chief justice, leading the Judicial Branch with wisdom, resolve, and fairness,” Walz said in an announcement Tuesday.

“She brings a rare breadth of experience, having served at every level of our state’s judiciary, and will be the first public defender to serve as chief justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court. That perspective will be invaluable, guiding her leadership as she takes on this profound responsibility to serve all Minnesotans.”

Gaïtas, a University of Minnesota Law School graduate, said she's "committed to a judiciary that all Minnesotans can access, trust, and rely on. "

"These commitments will guide every decision I make as chief justice," Gaïtas said in a statement.  "I look forward to working alongside the talented judges and court professionals across this state, whose dedication makes justice possible every day. "

Chief Justice Hudson called Gaïtas "an excellent choice" for the court's next chief justice, adding that her successor is "a broad, nuanced thinker."

“Justice Gaïtas and I were frequent adversaries as practicing lawyers, and over the last two years, I have been fortunate to work with her as a colleague on the Supreme Court," Hudson said. That history has revealed that she is principled, thoughtful, compassionate and has a keen legal mind."

Walz also announced Tuesday that Reynaldo Aligada, a Ramsey County District Court judge and a former federal defender, has been selected as the state Supreme Court's newest associate justice.

“He is someone who leaves a lasting impression on everyone he meets, pairing a keen legal mind with genuine humility and compassion," Walz said of Aligada. "He will be a justice who truly sees and listens to the people who come before him, ensuring every voice is heard and respected."

Aligada promised to "strive to do justice and protect the rule of law" in his next role, while Hudson commended his "superb legal mind," adding that Aligada "is widely recognized for his thoughtfulness, integrity, and warmth."

The Barron County Sheriff's Office says it received a report of an injured child in rural New Auburn on Saturday.

It sparked a large response from multiple agencies, but the child ultimately died from their injuries despite lifesaving efforts at the scene.

Details of the child and the manner of the accident have not been provided by the sheriff's office.

Shortly before 5:30 p.m. Monday, the vehicle containing the child was stolen after their mother went inside Children’s Minnesota Hospital in south Minneapolis, a Minneapolis PD incident report says.

"Officers immediately began a grid search of the area and utilized available technology in an attempt to locate the vehicle," the report reads.

Around 6 p.m., officers were informed that the child had been dropped off at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, a block south of Children's Minnesota.

Police say the child was uninjured and returned to their mother.

No arrests have been made, and the vehicle hasn't been recovered, though an investigation by MPD continues.

In a Tuesday statement, the DNR has appealed for members of the public to submit any video footage from the vicinity of the Flanders Fire, which it has confirmed broke out near the north shore of Flanders Lake in Mission Township on Saturday.

Bring Me The News asked the DNR for further information on the "people of interest" and why they are regarded as such, but the department responded: "Because the cause of the fire is under active investigation, we are not able to release any more information about the investigation at this time."

The wildfire spread to around 1,666 acres in total, and as of Tuesday morning is more than 60% contained after progress was made by fire crews on Monday.

The DNR is looking for video submissions from residents on the western side of County Road 11 and Horseshoe Lake Road, who may have "trail cameras, ring doorbell cameras, or other information from between Friday, May 15 and Sunday, May 17."

On Tuesday, the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office announced that all evacuations relating to the fire have been lifted, with residents within evacuation zones able to return home.

The map below shows that the fire spread east after starting at the north end of Flanders Lake, jumping across Highway 11 and the Little Pine River as it expanded.

The donut shops in Burnsville and Lakeville will have their last days in business on Sunday, May 24. 

"As everyone knows, times are tough for small businesses," co-owner Kiley Van Daalen tells Bring Me The News. "Unfortunately, the cost of doing business outweighed the amount of donuts we were actively selling, and the business wasn't in a sustainable place."

Donut Star changed hands last summer, when the owners of Tapestry Coffee – Scott and Kiley Van Daalen and Brady Heerema – acquired the business from Peter Sebastian, who had taken ownership of the store three years earlier. 

Kiley notes that the closure will not impact Tapestry Coffee.

At the time of the sale, Sebastian said he was stepping away to focus on his other restaurants, Mario's, Estelle, and Liliana. 

"It has been such an honor to be a part of this community, and we are so grateful for every customer, every regular, and every smile we got to see across the counter," reads an announcement on Donut Star's Facebook page.  

The announcement adds that customers should use their Donut Star gift cards this week, and that the shops will close at noon (or when the donuts are sold out) on May 24.

A jury convicted Bock, 45, of overseeing the theft of more than $200 million in COVID-19 government meal program funding for children in need through her Twin Cities nonprofit, which approved payments for thousands of meals that were never served. She's scheduled to be sentenced Thursday.

In a court filing Monday, the Minnesota U.S. Attorney’s Office recommends that Bock spend 50 years in prison, arguing that she "aggressively pursued the enrollment of food sites to defraud the Federal Child Nutrition Program," siphoning millions of taxpayer dollars for herself and dozens of co-conspirators.

“The brazen and staggering nature of her crimes has shaken Minnesota to its core, leaving lasting damage and eroding public trust,” Minnesota U.S. Attorney Daniel Rosen said in the filing. “Her actions have permanently altered the state, and not for the better.”

An attorney for Bock has requested leniency, claiming that she deserves roughly a three-year prison sentence since she provided the government with evidence that was used to bring criminal charges against co-conspirators.

Defense attorney Kenneth Udoibok said in his own filing that Bock must be sentenced "based on what was proven against her, not on the sheer size of the broader public controversy, not on the conduct of every site operator and vendor who passed through the program."

Bock is among 79 charged in connection with the Feeding Our Future case, which federal prosecutors say is "the largest COVID-19 fraud scheme" in the U.S.

Of those charged, 65 defendants have been convicted since late 2022.

So far, Abdiaziz Shafii Farah has received the longest sentence, getting 28 years in prison for using his restaurant, Empire Cuisine in Shakopee, to defraud the federal government of more than $47 million.

Rosen said in his Monday filing that a 50-year sentence "appropriately reflects the seriousness of Bock’s crimes, promotes respect for the law, provides a just punishment, and creates adequate deterrence not only to Bock, but to all other individuals who take advantage of the state and believe that they are above the law."

The Stearns County Sheriff's Office says the Richmond Bus Service left the road while southbound on Jay Avenue in Munson Township at around 3:20 p.m., striking a tree and coming to a rest while straddling a driveway.

The bus, driven by a 72-year-old man from Sartell, was carrying around 30 children of various ages, and several suffered minor injuries that police say were primarily small cuts "caused by broken glass from the front window after impact with the tree."

The bus sustained heavy damage to the front end and passenger side.

Parents were notified and children were released to them at the scene while the bus was towed by a local company.

"The cause of the crash remains under investigation," the Stearns County Sheriff's Office said. "Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors in this crash."

The Smashing Pumpkins have announced a fall tour dubbed "The Rats In a Cage Tour," celebrating the 30th anniversary of their double album, "Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness." It'll bring them to Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul on Oct. 13.

"Staging a 'Mellon Collie'-themed show is something we’ve discussed for over a decade, and finally the stars have aligned and exactly on the terms I’d set: which was to build a special night around its most enduring aspirations and ideas," Corgan says

On each night of the tour, the band will play a set of music from "Mellon Collie," and a second that features "a career-spanning journey through nearly four decades’ worth of beloved hits, deep cuts, and fan-favorites alike."

Additionally, each night will include a VIP ticket package with a pre-show acoustic performance and Q&A with the band.

The tour announcement was preceded by a Los Angeles concert billed as a funeral for Zero, the avatar that Corgan has embodied since "Mellon Collie" was released.

Tickets for Smashing Pumpkins at Grand Casino Arena will go on sale to the public at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 21.

The draft has evolved into one of the biggest annual events on the NFL calendar, drawing hundreds of thousands of fans to the draft and events around it. Wendy Blackshaw, president and CEO of Minnesota Sports & Events (MNSE), estimates that the draft will bring $100 to $200 million in economic impact. 

That's a similar figure to estimates from VisitPittsburgh around the 2026 NFL Draft, which drew more than 800,000 fans according to official estimates.

The NFL began rotating draft cities in 2015, giving a different metro area the chance to host the event. Washington, D.C. will follow Pittsburgh in 2027 before the draft arrives in Minneapolis.

MNSE's economic impact estimate places the NFL Draft between the $450 million it says was generated by Super Bowl LII and the $71.5 million that was generated by the Twin Cities jointly hosting the IIHF World Junior Championship this winter.

The NFL Draft is typically held in late April.

The Minnesota Interagency Command System (MNICS) announced Tuesday morning that the 1,666-acre Flanders Fire in the Brainerd Lakes Area is now 60% contained after "very good progress" was made Monday, and evacuation orders are lifted as of noon Tuesday, with residents allowed to return to their homes.

Meanwhile, the 350-acre Stewart Trail Fire that broke out on Minnesota's North Shore near Two Harbors is now 100% contained, though Highway 61 remains closed to through traffic between Two Harbors and Silver Bay as of Tuesday morning.

While the North Shore fire is confirmed to have been started by a power line, investigation continues into how the Flanders Fire started.

"Excellent progress was made by firefighting crews yesterday and the fire is now at 60% containment," MNICS said of the Flanders Fire on Tuesday. "Crews continue to establish control lines with tracked vehicles and mop up hot spots. The Sheriff’s drone team was also able to launch several drones to better map the fire and help detect hot spots from the air. Crews also continued their assessment and mitigation of hazard trees with dozers and chainsaws.

"Crews will continue mop up work, improving containment lines, and continue their assessments of hazard trees in the area. With containment continuing to grow, firefighters and equipment are starting to be demobilized as the Incident Management Team prepares to transfer command of the fire back to local authorities."

Here's a look at the perimeter of the wildfire since it broke out about 10 miles east of Breezy Point on Saturday. Authorities say that County Road 11, which bisects the burn zone, has been reopened to traffic though drivers are still being asked to avoid using it unless it's absolutely necessary.

About two months after sharing his diagnosis, Kenneth "Kenny" Jary, died at the age of 84, according to an announcement Monday on his TikTok and Instagram accounts, which have more than 4 million followers combined. He was known as "Patriotic Kenny" to his legion of fans.

"The tears may never stop flowing. It is with the most indescribable sadness we share that Patriotic Kenny has passed," the post reads. "He experienced the most profound love and was Earth's bright light. He passed surrounded by love and he was in peace."

In March, a GoFundMe launched to fulfill the Navy veteran's wish of spending his remaining days at home in Willernie rather than in a hospital, nearly hitting its $345,000 goal.

At the time, organizers said any money that was left over would benefit the Patriotic Kenny Foundation, which provides free mobility scooters to other veterans.

Kenny started the foundation after his mobility scooter broke down in 2021, prompting an a GoFundMe campaign that raised $5,000 in 24 hours for a new scooter, and helped boost his burgeoning profile on TikTok.

"Any memorial contributions should go to his amazing nonprofit, the @patriotickennyfoundation, which will live on in his memory," the Monday post reads. "We will share more as time goes on."

A video of Kenny, a Navy veteran, reflecting on the significance of Memorial Day went up on social media hours before it was announced that he had died.

"You know, I have lived a long time; 84 years old," he says in the video, "And some service members have not lived that long. The people in my family who served have never made it to 84."

In an announcement, the theater says the decision is the result of a recent cyberattack as well as illnesses in the cast and staff.

Last week, the theater canceled performances from May 15 to 17 as it took precautions against what was determined to be a norovirus outbreak.

"Chanhassen Dinner Theatres is following all [Minnesota Department of Health] recommendations, including disinfecting surfaces daily," it says in the announcement, which notes that the MDH investigated the outbreak.

As it dealt with the illnesses, the organization detected an attack on its computer network, which was first announced on Saturday. It says it "quickly took its systems offline and is working with experts continuously to securely bring its systems back online."

The Star Tribune reports that the attack came with a ransom note, but the theater isn't sharing any further information.

It's an effort to ensure systems are operating properly and that there are healthy artists and staff available for performances. 

Ticketholders will be contacted directly about rescheduling for future performances.

"We are incredibly grateful to our community of artists, guests, and employees for their trust and partnership over many decades," Erickson says. "We apologize for any inconvenience these cancellations have caused."

Shortly after 1:20 a.m. Tuesday, Amiah Armstrong Walker was walking on the right shoulder of southbound Highway 252 between Brookdale Avenue and 73rd Avenue when she was struck by a speeding vehicle, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

An incident report says two of Walker's friends were in a different vehicle on the shoulder and were trying to convince her to get in, when a "dark gray Toyota RAV4 traveling at a high rate of speed in the right lane struck and killed the pedestrian."

The Toyota RAV4 left the scene after hitting Walker, who was pronounced dead before she could be taken to a hospital.

The Minnesota State Patrol is handling the investigation into the incident and suspects that alcohol was a factor.

In his end-of-season press conference, the Wild general manager talked about the team's playoff run and made it clear that he's not shy of going big-game hunting again this offseason as he looks to get Minnesota to its ultimate goal.

"We're in a window now," Guerin told media on Monday. "We're in a window where we have a very good team. So, we want to make sure that we don't just open the window three-quarters of the way. If there's a chance to get better, we will."

In a blockbuster deal in December, Guerin landed star defenseman Quinn Hughes in a trade that shocked the hockey world. Hughes further legitimized the Wild's status as a Stanley Cup contender, registering 53 points (5 goals, 48 assists) with the team going 27-14-7 in the 48 games he played with Minnesota. Despite surpassing the 100-point threshold for the third time in franchise history, the Wild had to go through Dallas (No. 2 in the Central Division) in the first round before eventually being eliminated by the Avs (No. 1 in the NHL) in the second round of the playoffs.

"We have not achieved our ultimate goal," said Guerin. "The expectations are higher than they ever have been before. I guess we got over that hump finally but, again, that's not our goal. Our goal is to win the Stanley Cup. It felt good, you know, it did. The feeling of being able to put that behind us was good. The fan reaction was crazy. It was incredible, I'm happy for them, I'm proud of that. But, like I said, it's not what we're after."

As the trade deadline approached in early March, the Wild were heavily linked to several potential blockbuster moves. No big move happened, though they did take some swings on veteran talent that filled out the roster.

"Yeah, I mean, we have a ton of interest in bringing (Michael McCarron) back," Guerin said when asked about McCarron, who the team acquired from Nashville at the deadline. "He was a really good fit. He delivered on everything that we knew about him, and was told about him. But yeah, I think everybody was really happy."

In 20 games with Minnesota, McCarron registered five points (three goals, two assists) and came up with big plays for the Wild throughout their playoff run.

While acquisitions like McCarron helped in spots, the team is still in need of a top-line center. Guerin stated that he's "going to keep improving this hockey team and get better and keep moving forward." He added that the team has "cap space" and "assets" to help do "whatever we can to continue to make this team better and better, so we can win a championship."

Guerin also acknowledged that the primary interest surrounding the Wild's offseason is in potentially acquiring a No. 1 center, and that, if something is available along those lines, he will be involved.

"The talk here is always the No. 1 center," Guerin said. "You know, obviously that's — we'll see what's available. But again, these are — I can't give you those answers today because we don't know who's going to be available, what's going to be available. This is still fresh. But, like, I think I've shown you, and our fans, and everybody involved that if there's something out there that can make our team better, I'm willing to do it and I won't sit on my hands."

While the Wild gave up significant assets to land Hughes in December, Guerin said he's confident he has the assets to swing another big trade.

"Yeah. There's always a way. There's always a deal to be made," Guerin said when asked whether he has the chips to trade for a top-line center. He added that he's "always confident" in his ability and "always willing" to get a deal done.

While the free agent targets this summer are slim, there are a number of supremely talented centers that, for one reason or another, may be available on the trade block over the next several months.

"I don't want to make knee-jerk reactions or say stupid things," said Guerin. "We just want to move methodically and improve the team every single year."

Hughes extension

When the Wild landed Hughes, they got no assurances that he would be willing to sign with Minnesota long-term. Next season, Hughes will be entering the final year of a six-year, $47.1 million deal he signed with Vancouver in 2021.

Shortly after being eliminated by Colorado, Hughes was asked about his future in Minnesota. The star defenseman said he "really liked" being with the Wild and that he "would definitely be open to re-signing."

"We're interested in signing Quinn, too," Guerin said. "I mean, we loved having Quinn. He was so impactful. He's extremely dialed in on what's going on here. I know he liked it here. He liked the team; the team really embraced him. I loved having him here. The impact he had was incredible. So, yeah, priority one. But these are things that take time. I think everybody needs time to decompress. But, yeah, that's priority one."

With Kirill Kaprizov's cap hit jumping from $9 million this season to $17 million next season, the Wild are a bit pressed for cap space. According to PuckPedia, Minnesota will have around $13.51 million in available cap space in 2026-27. That number jumps to around $48.46 million in 2027-28, when Hughes' next contract would kick in, so there is certainly room to sign the 26-year-old to a potentially record deal.

Goalie situation

One of the other big, looming questions hanging over the Wild this offseason is how the team will handle its goalie situation. Filip Gustavsson's is fresh off a $34 million contract extension, but his health has been thrown into question along with his status as a No. 1 ggoalie after the stellar play Jesper Wallstedt.

Wallstedt was handed the starting spot in the playoffs after a strong finish to the regular season. In the postseason, Wallstedt started all but one game and recorded a .909 save percentage. In his lone start in the playoffs, Gustavsson allowed four goals on 22 shots in a 5-2 Game 2 loss to Colorado.

On Monday, Guerin noted that Gustavsson is undergoing surgery on his hip. Guerin said he wasn't sure if Gustavsson would be available by the start of next season, but that the injury wasn't related to something that happened in a game, saying that it was "wear and tear" related.

Gustavsson's surgery and rehab will likely complicate whether the team could use him or Wallstedt as a trade chip this summer. With both goalies playing well throughout the season, it gave the Wild two starting-caliber goalies. While that's definitely a benefit, it also provides the opportunity to use one as a lucrative trade chip to land a potential top-line center.

According to The Athletic's Michael Russo, the Wild offered Wallstedt, and young forward Danila Yurov, to St. Louis in a proposed trade that would have netted center Robert Thomas, who would have filled that No. 1 center need. The Blues rejected the trade and, with his play, Wallstedt may have staked his claim as the Wild goalie of the future.

"Yeah, no, I like our goaltending situation," said Guerin. "To be quite honest with you, both of our goalies are No. 1 goalies. The luxury of it is being able to put a fresh, rested goalie in net every night. Both guys are signed. They're both very good. They work well in a tandem. They support each other. So, I'm very comfortable where it is."

The news broke Tuesday morning, with Zeigler congratulated on KARE 11 Sunrise by co-hosts Alicia Lewis and Jason Hackett, and his promotion announced via a video message from Jensen.

"It's great to have him home," said Jensen. "He did an amazing job on Sunrise and he will be an amazing chief meteorologist.

"He knows his stuff, he loves his weather and if you follow him you already know that."

A graduate of Champlin Park High School and St. Cloud State University, Zeigler has been at KARE 11 since summer 2023, having previously spent five years as chief meteorologist at WKOW in Madison, Wis.

He will join a new-look weeknight news team that includes longtime anchor Julie Nelson, Kevin Holmes, Rena Sarigianopoulos and Lauren Leamanczyk on the 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts starting May 26.

Speaking to Lewis and Hackett on Tuesday, Zeigler admitted his promotion is "surreal" and he couldn't sleep ahead of this morning's announcement.

"KARE 11 has had some of the most incredible chief meteorologists walk through this door from Paul Douglas, Ken Barlow and, of course, Belinda,” he said. "Taking over this role is an honor of a lifetime."

"My goal as chief at KARE 11 is to continue delivering a sensible and honest forecast to the community," he added. "Most importantly I will never trash a snowstorm as a bad thing. I love this crazy weather."

"As a Minnesota native, John understands our weather, our seasons, and the unique challenges that come with forecasting in this state," said KARE 11 President and General Manager Doug Wieder.

"Over the past several years, he has become a trusted part of the KARE Sunrise team, earning the respect of both our viewers and his teammates. Earlier this month, KARE 11 announced that Sarigianopoulos would be filling the vacancy left by Jensen on the station's Saturday show.

City leaders gathered Monday to announce the Firearm Assault Shoot Team (FAST), featuring one MPD lieutenant, seven MPD officers, and personnel from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office, and Metro Transit Police.

Officers from the Bloomington Police Department are expected to join FAST in June.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara describes the new unit as "a smarter, faster, and more collaborative approach to reducing gun violence in Minneapolis."

“This partnership between the Minneapolis Police and law enforcement partners strengthens our ability to investigate shootings, share intelligence, and hold violent criminals accountable," O'Hara said in a statement.

Nonfatal shootings in Minneapolis previously were investigated by MPD’s homicide investigators, and by separating nonfatal and fatal shootings, the department hopes to improve efficiency and effectiveness in both types of investigations.

Still, Minneapolis was already seeing fewer nonfatal shootings and higher clearance rates, with 255 victims and 47% of cases closed in 2025, compared to 312 victims and 27% of cases closed in 2024, according to data shared by the city.

“In Minneapolis, nonfatal shootings are still shootings, and require perpetrators to be held accountable,” Mayor Jacob Frey said. “All Minneapolis residents deserve to feel safe living everyday life, and FAST will dedicate a response team to nonfatal shootings to interrupt patterns of retaliatory violence and build safer neighborhoods across the city.”

The St. Paul Police Department launched its nonfatal shooting unit in collaboration with the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office and the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office after receiving $1.7 million from the Minnesota Legislature in 2023.

Since then, the initiative has helped St. Paul nearly double its clearance rate for nonfatal shootings, climbing from 37% in 2024 to 71% in 2025, according to city data.

Nonfatal shootings in St. Paul also dropped significantly year over year, with 183 in 2024 and 73 in 2025.

The trio just announced a forthcoming album and a big global tour, which includes a Sept. 21 show at the Armory in Minneapolis.

On Monica, Harlow pivots away from his playful rap style that scored him three number-one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 between 2020 and 2023 and served as the basis for his last Minneapolis show at the Armory in 2022.

Every Third Saturday (ETS), which runs Rick's Coffee Bar in the Nokomis East neighborhood, wrote on Facebook: "It is with profound sadness that we have lost our Internship Director, Amos Ferrier. Amos was severely injured during a robbery and lost his life."

According to ETS' website, Ferrier served as an Army medic for 15 years and oversaw the career coaching and other personal development work at Rick's Coffee Bar.

Minneapolis PD says the incident happened around 1:35 p.m. Friday on the 5400 block of 43rd Avenue South, where the victim – Ferrier – confronted two people trying to steal his car.

The suspects fled the scene in the car they had arrived in, with Ferrier ending up on the car's hood, and was thrown from the vehicle as it was driven along the street, suffering a head injury that led to his death on Sunday.

"His deep commitment to community-building drives his efforts to create stronger connections between veterans and non-veterans, fostering mutual understanding and support," the website bio for Ferrier states.

ETS said his death leaves "a hole in both his biological family and his ETS family that can never be filled."

"During his time at ETS, he impacted all of our lives with his humor, infectious laugh, and abundance of knowledge," the organization shared. "Amos was the kind of person you always wanted to see and have a chat with."

It’s been a remarkable transition from La Niña at the start of the year to El Niño conditions already by May. The graphic below shows SSTs (Sea Surface Temperature anomalies/departures from normal) across the Eastern Pacific for January 2 and May 14.

What is El Niño? A reminder:

In normal or “neutral” conditions, winds near the equator blow from east to west. We call these light winds the trade winds. Surface waters warm in the strong sun and are pushed westward. This causes upwelling in the eastern Pacific on the west side of South America, pulling cold, nutrient-rich water from the depths up to the surface. For this reason, the eastern Pacific waters are usually considerably cooler than the western Pacific.

In a La Niña cycle, such as the one we just came out of, this process is amplified. The trade winds blow faster, water is pushed west more quickly, and upwelling accelerates. The chilly waters of the east become even colder and the warm waters in the west become even warmer.

In El Niño, the opposite happens. The process shuts down or reverses. This causes surface water temperatures to spike in the central and eastern Pacific.

The reason any of this matters is because wherever there’s warm water in the oceans, thunderstorms follow. Thunderstorms suck huge amounts of air and water vapor from the surface and spew it upward. What goes up must come down, and our jet stream pushes that air east where it then descends, forming huge areas of high pressure. Moving this process around changes global circulation and weather patterns.

El Niño impacts on Minnesota

Deciphering El Niño impacts on our summer weather is murky, especially since the process has just started. We do know, though, that winter weather is very much impacted by El Niño, and it’s proportionate to how strong the El Niño is.

Recall just three years ago, the winter of 2023-2024 was a strong El Niño, and Minnesota saw its warmest winter ever recorded. In modern times, the impact of a warmer climate and El Niño tends to “spike the ball,” as it were, on winter temperatures.

I wouldn’t say it’s likely we have another record-warm winter. Statistically, that’s a rare event, even in our warmer world. But let’s say I wouldn’t be at all shocked if we’re in a top 10 warmest winter again this year.

Why the hype this year?

I’ll be honest, everything’s hyped more now than it used to be as everyone is looking for clicks. But this El Niño episode could be of historic proportions, worthy of some of the headlines.

Let’s look at the American forecast models for El Niño first. The chart below plots forecast SSTs over a three-month forecast period into 2027. All the lines are different scenarios, with the consensus/average being the black line.

The American CFSv2 model forecasts SSTs reaching +2.0 degrees C above the 1991-2020 average by late fall into the start of winter. That would qualify as a strong El Niño (1.5 to 2 degrees C). “Super El Niño,” which isn’t a technical term but is considered a very strong El Niño, is generally considered to be above +2.0 degrees C.

The forecast is for a 37 percent probability of a very strong or “Super” El Niño developing. That’s pretty high, but this is just one set of forecast models.

Let’s take a look at the European set of forecast models. The European model is forecasting an even stronger El Niño, which is alarming.

The consensus is a +3 degrees C SST (sea surface temperature anomaly) by late fall. That’s an incredibly strong El Niño with major impacts on global weather patterns.

For reference, the strongest recorded El Niño episode was 2014-2016 when the peak SST reached +2.8 degrees C. We did have mild Minnesota winters in that period, but they weren’t record-setting like the 2023-2024 winter when the El Niño was weaker.

This further demonstrates the point that there’s a lot of uncertainty in forecasting and impacts. Lots of things have to come together, but the very reason we forecast is to try to be prepared and be better safe than sorry.

But if you’re a winter lover like me, I would plan to be disappointed this winter.

Police responded to the Fine Line, 318 N. First Ave., around 9:30 p.m. Sunday on a report of a stabbing, according to the Minneapolis Police Department.

The man was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.

Police believe an altercation preceded the stabbing, but no arrests have been made as of Monday afternoon.

"Investigators are working to determine the sequence of events that led to the stabbing," MPD said in a statement.

Michigan rappers Babyfxce E and Luhh Dyl were scheduled to perform at the Fine Line on Sunday night.

First Avenue owns the Fine Line and declined to provide comment on the stabbing to Bring Me The News.

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty announced Monday that Christian J. Castro, 52, has been charged with four counts of second-degree assault with a deadly weapon and one count of falsely reporting a crime in the Jan. 14 shooting of Julio Sosa-Celis during Operation Metro Surge.

"Castro fired his service weapon at the front door of the home, knowing there were people who had just run inside that presented absolutely no threat to him or anyone else," Moriaty said.

A bullet struck Sosa-Celis in the thigh, passed through a closet, and lodged in a child's bedroom. No one else was injured, though a pair of agents who were involved claimed that shots were fired in self-defense.

A nationwide warrant has been issued for Castro's arrest.

This is the second round of criminal charges filed by Moriarty's office against an ICE agent, though other cases are still pending, including the fatal shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti.

Last month, Gregory Donnell Morgan Jr. was charged with two counts of second-degree assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly pointing a gun at two people during a Feb. 5 confrontation on a highway in south Minneapolis.

Morgan still hasn't been taken into custody, but Moriarty said "substantial progress" has been made in getting him to Minnesota to start legal proceedings.

Felony assault charges against Sosa-Celis and his roommate, Alfredo Alejandro Aljorna, were dropped in February when new video evidence surfaced, contradicting the claim by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that three men "violently assaulted" agents with a shovel or a broom during a "targeted" pursuit.

The DHS website still proclaims to this day that the ICE agent was assaulted by three men, despite witness testimony and today's footage showing that only two were involved.

Then-ICE chief Todd Lyons later told Politico that two agents involved may have lied in their sworn testimony, prompting an investigation by the U.S. Attorney's Office.

"The crimes that the federal government alleged they committed never occurred," Moriarty said.

"A violent crime did occur that night, but it was Mr. Castro who committed it."

Moriarty reiterated that an ICE agent's status as an employee of the federal government does not make them immune to state charges, as some Trump administration officials have claimed.

"I've said it many times, and I'll say it again, there is no such thing as absolute immunity for federal officers who commit crimes in this state or any other," she said.

President Donald Trump will not be able to pardon Castro if he's convicted, according to Moriarty.

The Hennepin County Attorney's Office identified Castro as the agent who shot Sosa-Celis through investigative work by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

In March, Moriarty filed a lawsuit demanding evidence from the federal government in the nonfatal shooting, as well as the two fatal shootings in January, but she said there still hasn't been any cooperation.

"We will not rest in our pursuit of accountability for unlawful actions committed by federal agents in Minnesota," Moriarty said.

Prosecutors in Chisago County have charged James Alan Johnson, 72, with first-degree attempted murder and assault with a dangerous weapon in connection with the attack, which police responded to around 1 p.m. on Monday, May 11.

The criminal complaint alleges an Amazon driver told police he was dropping off a package at the home in Wyoming when he heard yelling, saw the victim inside with blood on her hands and Johnson holding a hammer.

The Amazon driver intervened in the attack, entering the home and yelling at Johnson to drop the hammer. Johnson allegedly gave the hammer to the driver, who set it down on the table, and then retreated to the basement.

According to the criminal complaint, police arrived and found the unoccupied Amazon truck outside the home and the front door open. The victim was laying on her back on the living room floor in a pool of blood, yelling for help.

The woman had two large indents on her head, charges state, and she told police her husband had hit her in the head with the hammer twice and that she had kicked him in the crotch when he was on top of her.

According to charges, Johnson told investigators the business he manages is facing a financial crisis and that his wife "would potentially be living off of significantly reduced social security benefits and [he] did not want [her] to have to deal with that."

Johnson allegedly admitted he started planning to kill his wife "some days before" the attack.

The Meeker County Sheriff's Office says that at 4:45 p.m. Friday, a deputy was parked along 365th Street when a driver pulled alongside with "blood visibly coming from the mouth."

The 78-year-old man from Sherburn, Minnesota, had a gunshot wound to the side of his face and head, which he said he sustained while driving south on MN Highway 4 near 380th Street in Union Grove Township.

The man was taken to Paynesville Hospital by ambulance and then airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center with "serious but non-life threatening injuries."

"The preliminary investigation indicated an individual was target shooting on their family-owned land and an errant round struck the driver," the sheriff's office said.

A search warrant was executed at the property and "evidence was recovered," but no arrests have been made as of Monday. The investigation continues.

"The talk here is always the No. 1 center. You know, obviously, that's, we'll see what's available," Guerin said Monday. "But again, I can't give you those answers today because we don't know who's going to be available, what's going to be available. This is still fresh. I think I've shown you, and our fans, and everybody involved that if there's something out there that can make our team better, I'm willing to do it, and I won't sit on my hands."

So who could they go after?

The Wild reportedly tried to get Robert Thomas from the Blues in a swap for rookie goaltender Jesper Wallstedt and young forward Danila Yurov before the trade deadline, but nothing transpired. Looking back at that potential package, the Wild may have dodged a bullet considering Wallstedt's outstanding play in the postseason. But that doesn't mean Minnesota won't revisit talks with St. Louis this summer.

Guerin has been aggressive since taking over as Wild general manager. Being rebuffed once at the deadline doesn't seem like it would deter Guerin, who now knows what the Wild will need to offer to land Thomas, who played youth hockey with Quinn Hughes. If Guerin is trying to get Hughes to sign a long-term deal, what better way to convince him to stay than by landing one of his childhood friends?

The free agent options this summer are thin, and where there are options, they are generally on the older side. The thin free agent market is why many expect the trade market to be robust this summer, but also expensive.

The Wild were heavily linked with a move for Rangers center Vincent Trocheck at the deadline. A move ultimately didn't pan out, allegedly due to New York's asking price being too high. With a relatively weak free agent pool and potentially more offseason interest, that price is likely to remain high.

In the midst of front office upheaval in Toronto, there has been constant noise about the potential future of superstar center Auston Matthews. The 28-year-old was the captain for Team USA in February and has been a 100-point scorer twice in his career, while also leading the league in goals three times. The price for Matthews would be incredibly steep. But with just two years left on his deal, the former No. 1 overall pick will have some influence about his future.

If Matthews lets the new Maple Leafs front office know that he doesn't intend to re-sign, then Guerin, who has publicly stated his admiration for Matthews on numerous occasions, might be first in line to talk shop.

Then there's the oft-rumored link-up for Hughes with his brother Jack, who is a star center for the New Jersey Devils. Jack still has four years left on his deal, so any trade for him would cost the Wild a hefty sum.

Another former childhood teammate of Quinn's who might be available and has been mentioned as a potential target for Minnesota is Ottawa's Brady Tkachuk.

Tkachuk, while not a center, is a playmaking wing who won 57.6% of his faceoffs this season. Tkachuk was also a member of Team USA, so Guerin has experience with what the 26-year-old provides a team. Tkachuk has two years left on his contract, which makes him a potential trade candidate, especially if he lets the Senators know he doesn't plan on re-upping with Ottawa.

Despite the prospect of higher prices for trade packages this summer, Guerin isn't shying away from the potential to make a deal. When asked on Monday whether he thinks the organization has the chips to put together a package to make a deal for a top-end center, Guerin quickly said, "Yeah."

"There's always a way," Guerin continued. "There's always a deal to be made."

Minnesota has clearly opened its championship window, and getting better production at center will be a major key to going even deeper in next season's playoffs.

Keyshawn Beckom, a 23-year-old Duluth resident and former standout wide-receiver at Duluth Denfeld High School, was killed in the crash, which happened around 3:45 a.m. on Highway 2 in Culver Township.

St. Louis County jail records show the 24-year-old driver is in custody in connection with criminal vehicular homicide and DUI.

The patrol said the driver was traveling eastbound on Highway 2 when he entered the oncoming lane of traffic, went into the ditch and struck a power pole. The impact caused the pole to snap in half.

Officials confirmed that the driver's license was revoked at the time of the crash, and court records show the driver has two prior convictions for driving after his license was revoked.

He's also been convicted of DWI and carrying a pistol while under the influence of alcohol related to a 2024 incident.
