A second inmate has died in as many weeks Hennepin County Jail, which followed a reported “medical incident” on Tuesday.
The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office said a 36-year-old man in-custody was found unresponsive in his bed.
Medical aid was provided by staff and responding paramedics and was continued as the man was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
It comes after the death of a 21-year-old man at the jail on Sept. 18. The sheriff’s office also described the Sept. 18 death as a “medical incident,” which the man allegedly suffered while he was being attended by nursing staff in the jail’s medical room.
“I’d like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the individual’s loved ones,” said Sheriff Dawanna Witt. “These incidents weigh heavy on all those impacted. I appreciate the consideration and professionalism that was shown by our staff and partners who responded to assist with the incident.”
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office will identify the man and determine his cause of death. The office has yet to release the other man’s name or cause of death as of Wednesday.
At the weekend, a 54-year-old woman died after being found unresponsive in her bunk at Crow Wing County Jail.
